View Full Version : $12 Gas and Rationing?

I can add nothing to this story........

"Think $4 a gallon gas is already too much? Then brace yourself, says one expert.

"The prices that we're paying at the pump today are, I think, going to be 'the good old days,' because others who watch this very closely forecast that we're going to be hitting $12 and $15 a gallon, and then, after that, when world oil production goes into decline, we're going to talk about rationing," Robert Hirsch, Management Information Services Senior Energy Advisor, said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "In other words, not only are we going to be paying high prices and have considerable economic problems, but in addition to that, we're not going to be able to get the fuel when we want it."

Hirsch argued that the maximum in world oil production has already been hit.

"The idea is that [world oil production] would hit a sharp peak and then drop off, and what's happened is, we've hit a plateau in world oil production, and that plateau has been ongoing since about the middle of 2004," he said.

Those who argue that new technology and new types of energy will solve the problem aren't on solid ground, Hirsch suggested.

"There's no single thing that's going to solve this problem, because it's as massive as one can possibly imagine," he said."

You know I've noticed the gas increase hasn't bothered my Mennonite friends one bit. Got to at least stop and think about that for a moment. Mean while, I guess I should buy a few extra pair of shoes since I don't currently own a horse and I may be doing a lot of walking if it goes much higher.

Oil jumped $5/bbl overnight, so expect a shock at the pump by this afternoon. An additional .25 or more per gallon would not surprise me. Geed is the name of the game and I think it will get much worse before it gets better. Good luck! :o

I agree with Side Job - it will get much worse before it gets better. Sigh.

I'm sorry, but I don't think it is ever going to get better. The media appears to be very myopic on the topic of oil. Just like trying to avoid at all costs using words like recession and stagflation, they also conspicuously avoid using phases like "peak oil", and "decreased supplies".

It's time to acknowledge the fact that we're running out of oil and start taking the steps to change our lifestyle accordingly. So far, the American strategy has been to stop spending money on anything else so we can still fill our tanks. Less eating out, fewer luxuries, delayed purchases. In the long run this hurts the economy, puts people out of work, and everything goes downhill from there.

Does anyone here besides me carpool into work, slowed down, or even checked their tire pressure? There are almost painless sacrifices that everyone can do if they wanted to, but just about NOBODY does! This just demonstrates how spoiled and complacent Americans really are!

Heres a posting I made on the "How to survive peak oil" thread:

"Our future... as I see it; and I AM a gloom & doom sorta guy. *

Fuel rationing, as during WWII.
Increase driving license age to 18-21, with proof of HS education AND/OR full time employment. Folks on unemployment should have probationary privileges primarily to look for work.
Finally, federalized oil wells & refineries (confiscation aka public domain). This will seal the deal of government being petrocentric!

Plan for the worst & settle for less."

Cool looking! And I'm sure there is a market for them.
I like http://www.cruzbike.com/, more clearance; and you can make it from just about any y-frame bike.
I almost bought a kit for my bike in '06, but they were going thru some mods & production was WAY behind. Now my mad money is going to even more practical things.
