I have a single vertical cylinder chinese diesel 8KW generator
which has served me reliably for 10 years. Until now. It worked just fine two weeks ago during a power outage and now, when I go to give it it's monthly exercise run, the diesel runs fine, but the generator puts out zilch. This has happened before when the field lost it's "charge" and I have solved the problem by momentarily connecting the positive terminal on the starting battery to the positive terminal on the generator. Didn't work this time. Before I go into it, does anyone have any more ideas? I'm thinking that I will find a bad diode(s) or such. There is no sign or smell of anything fried.

Is the gen protected by fuses inside?? Look for
some as most gens have them.

Since I don't know what gen head you have I can't recommend much...

If you have an "ST" generator head, here is a wealth of info on the heads, parts, troubleshooting, etc.

Page after page of info...
