Hi, gang. I thought I'd drop a note since I have nothing better to do while I wait for the freezing rain to drop some more trees and power lines. We're getting hammered here in the Northern Mid-West, but not so bad as in other places. So far it has been the end of the road for four individuals (so far) whose death has been the result of this weather.

I work at a computer data center where we never, ever have a power outage. We have two of everything, including UPS systems.

If the ice drops a power line that causes the slightest blip in the power on our branch of the utility, we are off the grid in a nano-second and 5 big 1750kW diesel generators will resupply the UPS systems in from 6 to 30 seconds, depending on which set we're talking about.

Then my job will be to take electrical and engine readings and to transfer fuel from the outside tanks if the indoor tanks start to run low.

But for now, I just sit, drink coffee, surf the net, and calculate my overtime pay.

My family is home in bed. Our residential emergency plan is not so sophisticated, but more than adequate. They know what to do and when to do it.

So where were you during the ice storm of '07?

Her in West Central Il. we have snow, ice, then more snow, bitter cold and lotsa wind.
When the power is on I like to listen to the folks on TV bitch and moan about how bad it is. This is no worse and not as bad as many of the Feburarys I have seen. I really don't know what they expect.
Power outages don't make much difference to me as I have wood for heat. Drifting does make it hard to feed the livestock, but that's just part of living here.
I thin anyone who continues to depend on constant power for heat better put both hands in their back pockets and hang on, because I believe it is going to get worse.

I had first run for the airport so as not to get caught by freezing rain; the airport was 2 hours out of range.

Then I spent four days in a horrid gambling city and 50 degree weather, doing a science presentation, watching the weather channel and wondering if I could avoid the ice back home.

Did avoid it, but been there, so am grateful I missed it. We'd gotten hit with a previous ice storm further west.

Bleah to ice.

I also bought some Stabilicers, some over-shoe cleats.
