I don't know where to post this.
I used to write about these things a long time ago here on the forum.
Apparently , u.s. used to depend upon peru and some place in india for guana depostits to make fertilizer and explosives.
Germany found out how to make it other ways and had quite an advantage on us by doing it during wwii.
I forget how it goes, but we finally learned how to do it,too.
We developed the tennessee valley expressely to make damms that would drop water and make turbines turn to make electricity.
With a platanum catalyst, they were able to produce the nitric acid they needed for gardens and explosives, too.
They had told the people of tenn that the dams would hold back the sping tides that usually flooded their land, and have more areable land available to them.
In the process the people would also get the electricity that they desperately needed, and the fertilizers they needed for their gardens and, as the water dropped, it provided water for the crops during dry season, or some such thing.

I think there were 70.000 jobs opened up and the waterways were broadened and many turist sites were developed along them.
Missoui river was done the same way to make a lot of water available for the developement of the atomic bomb, as i recall.

Formerly, we had to go to peru for guano deposits. There were originally over 40 companies providing guana.
The guggenheim family, at some point, went to peru and broke down the companies and left only four.
They deviszed a scheme where most went *bankrupt and they made a killing on some hanky panky business deals. The company was called guggenex.
Germany held the patents on the process they used, and it took us some time to learn how it was done.
I think that muscle shoals was one of the cities involved, but i forget now.
Maybe someone remembers.
Maybe i'll check it out again if i can find the booklette it is in, or a floppy with the info on it. Not likely, though, and i have so many other things to do.
Washed, dried, and folded two loads of clothes and headed for a third load.
Nitrates have had a big place in our economy either in peace or war, and jet fuel and other things are made using it.
The panama canal was built expressely for an alternative route to peru in case of a war blockade.
So much of our history and economy revolves around the nitrate industry. love, alma
I wish we had a history place to *post things.
I'd really like to get back to some of these things i used to enjoy posting.

A "history forum" would be an excellent thing to have here, Alma. Great idea.

yeah alma i appreciate your time ahead of me here on this earth. my grandma-inlaw does a lot of work in her area of minnesota translating old documents written in different norwegian dialects.

i often look to the experiences & wisdom of your generation. it was a good story to hear from your perspective.
