Basicly, this is a homesteading forum.

Excluding the Freedom, Politics, and Related area, there are 7183 topics posted. In the FP and R area, there are 2419 topics.
I know that these issues are important to us, but a third of the topics here are related to Freedom, Politics and Related.

Seems to me to be a bit out of balance!

i think it would be wildly speculative to assume posting on the non-political topics would appreciably increase if the posting on political topics was to be limited -

I also made a similar observation before. After showing pics of the entire roof that I build myself for our homestead cabin I got a total of 6 responses. For something that took months of my time and thousands of dollars. Shortly afterwards I made a post about complaining about being stopped at a security checkpoint on a local highway. I got 42 responses to that. I had to make a third post about how disturbed I was that there was so little interest in what I thought was a "real" homesteading topic.

I blam it on the economy to be honest. Folks are worried, mad and looking for answers as well as ways to vent. The economy is on their mind even in their sleep. Loosing jobs, homes and savings has taken it's toll. Then we have this last presidential election that has folks up in arms waiting for the SHTF syndrom to hit. The simple life we all so enjoy sits on the back burner and we have switched to survival mode. It's too bad honestly because folks like yourself that post pics of projects could be a valued source of information to someone else wishing to take on the same project. Their is a ton of resources here on canning cooking building and such just for the taking. It may turn around. We will have to wait and see.

If you think about it, those subjects have a lot to do with homesteading. That is actually what got homesteading reborn.
They want to get away from the everyday worries but we are all somehow chained to it. I know I am.

You have to remember, too, that nothing sparks debate more than politics. As one who regularly reads (and occasionally posts to) the politics board, I can tell you: most of those posts are pure debate. Sometimes civil, often not. Do not think for a moment that your posts on other boards are not read and appreciated. ;)

I am interested in homesteading partly because I am interested in freedom. I was always told that "girls don't do that", but, let me tell you the chickens and garden do not CARE!

Neither does the fireplace.

And, after a few decades of training, neither does my husband! Free at last!!!!!!!!!!!

As for politics, there are a few things that I worry about.

Politics, freedom, police, security issues apply to everyone and a certain percentage of everyone will reply to posts about those topics. Your roof, or my fence or someone Else's garden will appeal to a much smaller percentage of readers and a similar percentage of those people will reply to those posts. If you posts a question you usually get a decent reply because people like to help or showoff or opine. My point is some topics have a broader appeal than others. Your roof project, understandably important to you and a point of pride, doesn't have as broad appeal.
I usually scan topics first and open what interest me first, then if I have time read the others. If I were not considering or in the midst of or have experience in roofing I probably would not open one.

I don't know much about all of this but it would seem to me that most readers are worried about homesteading becoming more necessity than choice.

I would say that the 3 things listed are common to us all, no mater what we think of homesteading, small farming or whatever. I'm not a homesteader...I'm a farmer. so many things on this sight do not intrest me...or do not apply to me.

Another thing to think on, Location. many of you will garden in the spring, and fall. I'm in the North (and on nov 19, looking at 4 inches of snow)
But I'm guessing that the topic of tapping trees for sap will not intrest a person in Florida. you get my idea. Actualy I came to this sight to get advice on good cats AKA mousers.

I do worry about the Fad ideas that may be presented to the person new to this life. someone is try'n to start a to water buffalo movement. Those crazy ideas make money for the one who starts it, but the greenhorn looses his shirt.
