Has anyone out there bought the solar powered generator that runs in the ads at the top of this page? I think it's $1500 with shipping. I'm curious for some input if any of you have already bought it and used it as to what you think.
Thanks Southerngirl

Southerngirl,
Look at the following thread that was started today. You can find it
by clicking HERE. (http://www.backwoodshome.com/forum/yabb/forum.pl?board=ene-solar;action=display;num=1242098050)
You may have to search but it was also addressed at length in another thread a couple months back.
Basically, you are overpaying for a gimmick that is not worth it. You can have twice as much of a solar system by buying the components individually from a solar distributor.
I gave an outline of my system and what the associated costs on my blog. You can read those costs by going here to Cedars Hill Farm. (http://cedarshillfarm.com/?cat=10)
Hope that helps.

Thanks Paul, I guess I should have checked the other posts, just so "lost" with the whole solar thing, did read everything on your blog. Thanks for the info, I enjoy all the pics of your place on there as well :)
I have soooo much more reading to do on solar and try to figure it out. Wonder if I could find someone in my area that could install it once I get to where I could afford everything.

Southerngirl, it is easy to install. I bet your husband can do it easily.
You first need to decide what your goal is with solar. Are you wanting to be 100% off-grid? Or, are you wanting only a backup system in case you lose power? Or, are you wanting to keep your utility power and run a few items from solar?
Solar is easy. My favorite book is "The Solar Electric Independent Home Book". You can buy it off Amazon.com. It is easy for anyone to understand. You can also go online and/or call BackwoodsSolar.com and get a free catalog. The catalog is an education. It explains all the different parts of a solar system and also tells you what all you can and cannot do with solar. It is worth getting. If you are planning to go off-grid, they will not charge you for your catalog... (*clearing throat*). get the drift? LOL I'm not telling you to lie, but let them know.
In your solar system you basically have your panels that go through a charge controller to keep from frying your batteries. Then two wires go to the batteries. From the batteries you supply electric to what you want. It's about that simple.
