I've made a pretty good living in the stone trades--masonry, carving, lettering, fireplace building (I can/could build a fine rumford fireplace), even some drywalling. Not too many young people want to go into such work since they've been conned into believing that the only way ahead is through a college degree. It seems that might be starting to change again, though, as the math (money in v money out) doesn't work out too well in a lot of cases. Anyway, there are a couple of organizations in the US that a person interested in the various stone trades can contact.
