Receiving the latest issue of the print magazine reminded me that I still haven't posted anything on the forum, so here goes...
I have been a subscriber for years, and also have been interested in self-reliant living for a long time. I don't know how many people in big cities subscribe to Backwoods Home, but I do. I live in the city of Chicago and mainly read the magazine as inspiration. I have started gardening a little and am a gun owner but otherwise am mostly just a reader.
I bought 35 acres of rural land in west-central Wisconsin in 2010. At the time I was very optimistic about living there soon. I subsequently bought an RV and paid someone to tow it to my place in Wisconsin and park it there. However, the RV was destroyed by mice over the next few years. I am only able to visit that land once or twice a year due to lack of vacation time at my job. That has basically been the end of my "homesteading" experiment, although I still own the land. My plan is to remodel the RV someday and try again. I do have electricity up there, but I don't have a well.
Well, that is my dream anyway.
Realistically, I live in a house in Chicago and will probably continue living here for some time due to lack of job opportunities in the country (with a salary that can support a family).
Welcome aboard.
The best made plans often fall apart.
Try again with the land and RV.
It will happen if you want it enough.
I have been to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
I could have spent a week there.
That said if I never go back to Chicago it will be just fine with me.
Welcome to the forum. I have been a member for awhile, but don't post much. I hope that someday you can find a way to make your dream come true. Don't give up.
Hi Matt! Welcome!
I guess I'm kind of the opposite of Wildapple. I'm new here, but seeing as how I'm retired with a sore leg (long story) I have lots of time to post - so I do.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your posts and getting to know you.
Jim
