Default But You Didn't

But You Didn't

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car, and I dented it?
I thought you would kill me.
But you didn't.

And remember the time, I dragged you to the beach, and you said it would rain, and it did?
I thought you would say, "I told you so."
But you didn't.

Do you remember the time I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you were?
I thought you would leave me.
But you didn't.

Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie all over your car rug?
I thought you would hit me.
But you didn't.

And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal, and you showed up in jeans?
I thought you would drop me.
But you didn't.

Yes there are lots of things you didn't do.
But you put up with me, and you loved me and protected me.
There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you, when you returned from Vietnam.

But you didn't.

Possibly would have been better for Memorial or Veterans Day, but it certainly reminds us of the high cost for freedom.

Even after all the years.
Quite thought provoking for many of us of that era.

Simply worded, yet emotionally charged, with immense feeling! I makes me want to know more, but since there was no indication of an author, that will probably never be. Might be better off not opening old wounds.

I lost a cousin there and his mother had two younger boys. The youngest made a career of the military and although now retired, he was still active at the time of Dessert Storm. When his orders came down for deployment, his mothers almost went berserk, believing he was headed into harms path. When it was fully learned he was headed to Germany, she gradually accepted his deployment with much relief. But she wasn't overly fond of his being in Germany, believing those closest would be inserted into harms way as the first round of backup troops, if a larger force became necessary.

But I am sure any mother under similar circumstances would have her anxious moments.
