Have you guys seen this?
Man, I just discovered they make a .50 cal. AIRGUN that uses 4500 psi to push the bullet out the barrel!

I like the idea of an air gun but what always seems to be the show stopper is what it takes to fill it with that 3,000 PSI. It does not sound like something a home consumer can do. Do you have to take scuba tanks and get them filled to charge it?

Apparently you can use scuba tanks or specially-developed hand pumps. The guy I heard talking about it said "several fills from a tank and several shots peer fill, but the economic choice is the hand pump". Apparently air guns have problems with scopes, but this has no problem with scopes and can be used to hunt larger game such as deer and black bear. He also said there WAS sound to it, but not loud enough to require hearing protection, and almost no recoil.

One of the problems with using SCUBA tanks is finding places which can fill them along with those who will fill them without a SCUBA certification.
The pumps can be expensive up front, but if they last several years they will eventually pay for themselves.
Most of the PCP (Pre-Charged-Pneumatic) guns operate at around 3000 PSI
There's lots of great information here:

Seriously, what is the advantage to an airgun over a conventional firearm? Especially in this case where a specialized pump is required refill the tanks. Its a slave technology no different per se than regular firearms, whereas the former is a slave to the pump, and that latter to gun powder etc. I don't see any advantage with the airgun.

I don't think there is an advantage to it where firearms are allowed, but airguns are often allowed in places where firearms are not.

1) Most places no permit needed
2) Once you buy the pump, air is free
3) You can cast your own ammo from scrap lead with a mold. Even around a campfire like the mountain men did.
4) Some are powerful enough to shoot buffalo, boars , or bears

Was at walmart tonight. Went by the air guns. Drooled over the 22 Benjamin and the 22 Ruger. Don't have anyplace to shoot them anymore. Both breakbarrels.
Last time I went hunting to hunt was with a 177. Rabbits. Made myself a promise not to shoot at over 30 yards. Stepped it off, got familiar with the distance, found a tree trunk to lean against at the edge of the clearing...
One rabbit was playing around across the clearing, about 55 - 60 yards. And one decided to torment me... it puttered around for a while at 35 - 40 yards. It was a good hunt as I enjoyed seeing the critters - but should have taken my 35 mm camera instead of the air rifle... lol

They now have a .50 cal air gun and one model has two barrels. It can shoot shot shells, .50 ball, and arrow bolts. It's called a Seneca Double Shot .50 cal Double Barrel Shotgun. it's pricey at $759 and can be filled with a pump that comes with it. You can see some videos of it at Fowler's Makery and Mischief on youtube.

It's a heavy son of a gun and you wouldn't want to shoot it free hand. Better to shoot it resting on something.

Big Bore Airguns makes a .72 caliber, about the same as a 12 gauge shotgun.
http://www.extremebigboreairrifles.c...6/.72_Cal.html
Air guns fascinate me as aim small miss small was what I was told repeatedly growing up. A "potato cannon" shooting golf balls is pretty nasty, and IMO for a Mad Max SHTF situation everyone should know how to make that and an air pump for it.
What in the world would we shoot at with a .50 or even a .72? The following video is graphic and is a .45 caliber air gun. Yes, it was probably fairly close but 300 grains (a little over 3/5 ounce) traveling at "slow" velocities is something to avoid. The 230 grain 45 ACP (firearm pistol) travels about 800 fps +/- and it is known for knockdown. Hunting vid, graphic

Big bore is fun, don't get me wrong. But other than cutting down trees (don't ask!) I think I'll stay .32 and smaller on my airguns. Not as much pumping, you see...

Can you take down a deer with a .32 cal air gun? What about a .50 cal air gun? I have never used any of the large cal air rifles.

Neither have I taken a deer (with air gun or other.) With that said, and the above belief in aim small, miss small, I would not be afraid to take the shot with a .25 air gun.
The caveats? I would pick my shot (see the above whine about the rabbit that did not enter my fire zone) and I would know my rifle and ammo thoroughly (see the above whine about no place to shoot anymore.)
When I scanned the following article I realized that the way it is written can be taken wrong. Please don't, it is just information. My thought - Anymore folks just do not have the time to go "play" with their air rifle for hours each day... Shoot a red wasp out of the air with a pellet and you are there but it is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the trip or not worth doing.

(PS Although something can be done, thought should be given as to whether it should be done. IOW, give me a .45 or .50 air gun to go hog hunting or deer hunting with, k? lol)
