Default Root Cellar

Posting this here just so it won't blot out active threads in more appropriate places:

I came across this fairly elaborate plan for a root cellar http://robertsprojects.blogspot.com/...ot-cellar.html Impressive, but I'm not sure I'd want to spend all that time, effort and $1000 to store $100 worth of carrots & potatoes.

But my real question is, if I did want to do this, how deep would it need to be? At my location in WI, the frost line is 4ft+ (water lines are placed 6ft deep).
