Default hugelkultur - gardening without irrigation

This is a short video from a workshop two weeks ago. The general idea is that if you build your raised bed with a lot of wood in it, you should be able to go the whole summer without irrigating or fertilizing.

Default raisedbed

I started one of those types of raised beds earlier this year; and will complete it before mid-summer next year. So far I'm liking it; however, it sure was hard for this old woman to create!

I dug the hole to accommodate a 6' x 30' bed, taking about 2-1/2 feet of great soil out of it. (Want it strictly for root crops and wanted to be able to sit on it without problems.) David threw the trees/limbs/brush into it that storms had taken down. We also threw some left-overs from slaughtering 8 goats and geese into it. Then threw a large bag of .... ummmm forgot but it was to help the decomposition. Then added half the soil I had taken out. Then I let the rainstorms take all that into the cracks and, what the weather didn't do, I did with a powerful stream of water. (I have more pictures but my album here will only hold so much.)
