Hooked or not, phonics needs to make a comeback.

Education was good, when...

the student was expected to learn by doing - making mistakes, learning what was done wrong, then trying again... FAILURE is an important teaching tool that's had it's reputation impugned by folks who think "failure is fatal".

It's the process that's important - and knowing the process - not as much the answer, or whether that's the answer that's accepted as "correct" today... but whether you've thought it all through.

BRING BACK THE ABACUS!

Education was good when,

The entire year of fourth grade in math was devoted to multiplacation and division.

The first 11 weeks was learning multiplacation facts 2 through 12.

Then copying multiplacation problems out of the book and doing them every day until you were multiplying 2 3 digit numbers together by the end of the first semister.

The second semister was devoted to division, both short and long, also copying the problems right out of the book.

No calculators were allowed, and the student was expected to redo the problems he got wrong the first time around hand in the paper for a revised grade.
