Default Poulan riding lawn mower

We have a Poulan riding lawn mower that we have had for 5 years. Never had any problems with it. Have done regular maintenance on it and it has always ran like a champ. About a month and half ago, while my husband was driving it, it was loosing power. When it finally died, there was a sound that sounded like a radiator boiling, but no radiator. When my husband raised the hood on it, he saw gas bubbling out of the carb. We got it back to the house, he took apart the carb, cleaned it and put it back together. Now, when it does start, it runs like a banshee and the smoke just pours out of the exhaust. If he leaves gas in the gas tank, it will leak out through the carb. Can't control the throttle, it will either go real fast or slow down, when it slows down, the mower dies. We really need to get this fixed as it is our "workhorse" of the place for right now and we are lost without it. Does anyone have any ideas about the problem and how to fix it?
