Default The beginning: homestead from hell.

My name is Di, I am a new person to this forum. I have to tell this story.... it was almost 15 years ago,...but it will tell you about me, how I got here and why. I will try to keep this short as possible...smile. It is 1999, I am single and having extreme issues walking and standing. Working two/ three jobs to keep my big fancy house in the heart of the city. Everyone at work is yelling at me....Go see the doctor your hip is broken. I was very athletic and my favorite past time was to hike the mountains with my G Shepherd. I went to the doctors, ....which freaked out...you got bone cancer and they put me crutches. I could not pay the mortgage with no job and living day to day. House sold one day....and I had to find someplace cheap with money I made on the house, I wanted to leave the city. I got a fix it upper, in the rain forest....with everyone screaming at me. "What is wrong with you? Are you nuts moving out the city into the countryside alone, and a house that need major work what are you nuts??? look at you! your are on crutches! " Perhaps I am nuts, I put them on ignore. Arrival at the house, day of moving..... I been loading the house with usage of trucks and movers. This was the last load, and my head is spinning of the chaos over the last few week. There I stand with those darn crutches.... the chain on my garage had been cut....they stole my dog, my parrot of 27 years and the junk washer machine. The neighbors came over and told me that I bought a house of drug dealer and they had trashed the house the week before with a major party, the screens kicked out, the rugs burnt and the ceiling....no keys to the doors. There I stand in crutches, ....this is the beginning of my journey. Four months later the doctors told they made a wrong diagnoses....death sentence remove but I was full of several serious bone diseases which in a year have me in a wheel chair. Did I fix that house up....I sure in the heck did....one hour at a time....in severe pain. My story is long and crazied....but the last few years have been blessed, my homestead half off grid is still with me although at times it feels like an endless war to keep it... , alone an fighting bone disease.... still but I have made it into a beautiful artist home. My sister told me God put your butt down so you would go back and do art....today I am doing master wood carvings. I am super slow but it gives a little food on the table at times. So this is me, my animals, and my 1,000s of books as we march on down the road of life....often times muttering to the heavens! I found this board from Annes book, it will be super nice to talk to people who I have things in common with in our often insane world. .....smile Di

Welcome here.
I hope you can post some pictures of your work sometime.
I was expecting your story to end with total health. Was the prognosis that you would be in a wheelchair or are you in a wheelchair?
Praying that your health will improve day by day.

Default the wheel chair

My health .....yes....could be written in books. Smile. I am now out of wheel chair because of massive surgery on the hips and femurs (that almost killed me),... but it...let me walk again. I have severe arthritis in every joint of my body with Fibro plus a few other bone dieases... But arthritis is not resolved by bone replacement....it just continues on as noted there are no cures.... honestly I need joint replacement in about ten different places right now. I have no plans to become the next robot....which I would be if they did what they want. I have one leg although, due to the surgery I believe,.... that goes totally dead when ever it feels like it., of and on ....they want to split me open like a dead frog to see what is wrong,... sorry no go...one to many surgery already, as you know they put you down for at least six months... I got things to do, people to see, fur balls to feed.... Surgery is dangerous especially when it is bone replacement, infection can come from a simple cut and it goes straight to surgery site. Two years ago....I was helping a neighbor pull killer vines out of the trees...I live on a mountain and fell....breaking three ribs, ripped the whole front of my bad leg muscles and made back issues major. That accident did not help my issues. Later.... I found out all those great meds do nothing but mask issues and make new issues...things the doctors and I swore where helping me,... was making everything 100 times worst. A year ago,.. I went off all of it.....to my shock started to notice one problem after another started to go away. I started to eat super well and started to feel normal again. I will never be 100% better as the OA is twisting my fingers, feet and everything else into a big mess. But I learn to deal with the extreme pain, and I learn a new methods to do things such as: to hold my chisels I can tie them to my hands on bad days...every thing is do able if your creative and learn hard core patience....I can walk that is until I get a lot worst again,... then I will be in the wheel chair again. The doctors (I have 27 specialist that was until I lost my insurance to the great leader of our country) say I should not be walking I am such a mess....but I do. They say what ever your doing keep doing it....because it is working. It is the homestead, it keeps me moving no matter what....those bones have to move or they will fuse together...that is the secret,... exercise until you drop. Honestly I am doing better this year then I have in over 14 years.... I can get into the car and drive without dying in pain when I hit a pot hole....and that is major.

[IMG]file:///C:/Users/Owner/Pictures/IMG_0216.jpg[/IMG] Test time to post a picture....we are working on the first pic. This my wood work.... been working on this six months and pulling hairs...smile. He is not finished as the coral will have a complete reef system attached. Sea turtle is made of monkey pod and the coral is driftwood carved to look like coral.... it drove me nuts. This work when finished will help me in the future to get major commission ....I hope.

Default My pictures

Everything you normally see in the pictures is junk recycled....and ready made. For example the turtle I made...the table 2 dollar garage sell. The whole patio set bought from an attorney who flipped on drugs and ran out of the islands leaving everything behind, ebay friend sell 50 dollars (this set must have been in the thousands because it is not junk) and painted with enamel. Cushions,... garage sell where junk that I spray painted them line green where free. The rain barrel an old resin pot ...the rain chain I made out refrigerator copper pipe....the rain barrel has holes which run into a surface ditch that follows a hand dug pathway to the fruit trees. I am a junk collector....I get tons of stuff free....neighbors have a saying do not throw it away....Di may want it, go ask her. If it is valuable I may do a barter, a trade for other items, and etc... I even go to stores and ask for super reduction in price for broken things as I can fix them often.....like yard art. You do not have to have money to have nice things which I learn from a book call Simple Abundance A Daybook of Comfort and Joy

Beautiful work War.

What island do you live on? FTWB, Frank the Wonder Boy, and I spend some time in the Carib. PR and St. Croix mostly but have been to several islands.

I have been a egger for over 45 years and just now go a highspeed, 360,000 rpm, drill so I can carve eggs a little easier but I have done OK with my 40 year old Dremel at 30,000 rpm.

While I don't use Flikr myself, I have it figured out from spending time on a photography forum.

On your flikr page when you are viewing a pic, click on the "share" link. This is where I hate these kind of sites as you have to guess what the buttons mean since there are just graphics (no words). The share link is a box with an arrow pointing to the upper right on the right side of the page.

When you click on that box, a window will pop open. The first row is yet another row of buttons with now words again which I think are for facebook and stuff. The next row below you will see "link", "htlm", and "BBCode". Click on "BBCode".

Just below that row is the size of the image. When you click on the image size, a drop down menu will show different sizes. I picked the largest size. Then the last row will now have the correct code that you want to copy to paste here.

Now in a thread like this, just simply paste that code into this text box. There is no need to click any of the buttons above here like "insert image".

Glad you got the picture posted.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. It's very inspiring and proves that despite tonnes of adversity, with the right attitude and toughness, you can get through most anything and come out on top.

Glad your here on the forum......I'm new too.

I am working on the pictures, this is taking major time..... I had to join a photo group....then figure out what all the buttons mean....no manual. Then transfer the photos to here... plus resize which takes more doing and then figure out why they do not show. The other forum (artist) I just take photos, resize and post from my computer....so this is a new learning curve. Meanwhile.. I have to get the killer vines that grow about forty fifty feet in one month out of my trees, the vines are almost impossible to kill...they are most hated weed. If you do not kill them they will cut the sun off the tree and it will die. It is hot and it rains, the soil is good to great, things grow like jack and bean stalk. Great things grow that fast, but the bad that includes weeds and more weeds. The good and the bad... I am learning .... I got a few master craftmans dumping off wood chips about 50 contractors bags....along with cardboard on the ground seems to control some of the worst issues. This is one of the ten thousand things I got to do....life never stops for long....on the homestead.

Part two who I was before the crash of my bones.....was what formed me into today. You will see I am very outspoken, hardcore.... people think I am military trained but no. but is because of my life experiences. For the first time (old enough it does not matter any more)....on the web I will tell a little about my life before the crash. Story: I am 18 years old a white country small town girl....thin, fragile and scared....I am the one that could not play sports, could not throw a ball, if you had me on your team you would loose. I told my grandson I did not play ball because grandma was scared of the ball Just married and cleaning house...my husband suggested I get a hobby so I joined a karate school with this best friend who was Japanese. Grandmaster YC Kim Korean military instructor, along with two other master instructor came to US to have a better life. He was delighted his new only women student, I guess he felt sorry for me...because talent I did not have. He called his turtle without shell and meaning vulnerable to attack,.... smile. We trained military style which means you got yelled out, kicked, hurt and if you could not take it you left....I did not leave...I was scared and I did it anyway. I would work out four hours a day....for 25 years. Years later the classes grew giant....and the people coming into them could not take the training...so they changed to what I call whimp style I got called in to a new training hall across town to teach class....always all men....these men beginner never saw me before, I had two male assistants... I learned a long time into this, in order to get a males respect is to show them I was not only capable but mean....that meant the marine sgt. instructors drill. This one guy face drop when I walked into the room and I knew he was trouble... first thing out of his mouth was " Your going to teach us how to fight!" My assistant laugh and told the guy he would pay dearly for that remark....and that I did, I did not yell orders and I did what I wanted them to do, I exercised with them. He quit class that day and never came back. Master Kim thought this was very funny. This was the beginning of marine stg mouth which I am told I still have People ask me if they know my background if I have ever used it.....yes I have and a few time it saved my life. I was walking home from karate work out, an a guy jumped me, tried to drag me into his car, later found out he was a serial killer. But I damage him enough to make him run to car screaming, "I am sorry lady, I am sorry." This of coarse does help a womens safety issues, you know your vulnerable and any thing can happen to you anytime. You sit at night thinking they are coming to get you....talk about freaked out. This incident hit the front line of the newspapers, then I had to call mom and dad an tell them what happen as they hated the city and everyone in it. I think this one incident changed my whole world, as later I got into the world of insanity, chasing and cuffing. Although note in law, I can not legally touch anyone and use my martial arts on them, it is against the law. Later I would be forced to work for a woman (always worked for Men) who I heard was hard core...her past history was PD...first woman cop in florida worked in homicide sex offense ...meaning serial killer. Her and I became best friends under her wings, we did many things together including safety and security for the hospitals, disaster training for the hospitals. I knew about the mid eastern terrorist threats nine years before they finally made their move in Sept 11....I sat there watching the TV....the perfect bomb they finally did it. Meanwhile to get away from life I went trekking ....like along the Cambodia border looking for tigers I wanted to see a real one...never did Never in wildest dreams would I know that my whole world would crash and I would have to change me and my life beyond belief. Although my best friend would follow me with kidney disease.....as we did her bucket list and she would pass away and me.... The doctors up front tell me The good news you are not dying. The bad news you are not dying. Meaning there will tons of times you will beg god to take you away. They say the only thing that they think keeps me going is my martial arts training....rough, rugged....hard core.

I learned the computer as it became part of the job. I joined a team of women when the Forums where brand new.....there were several doctors, authors of books, social workers and few psychiatrist that made forums to help women who been raped or domestic abused but their where no moderator only the board internet carrier. On note most of women who where on the board post where not women but children from 13 years old to 18 to scared to call law enforcement, some of them become cutters, drug addicts to cope with the trauma. We got a few sociopathic rapist from prison on our board (yes they allowed to use the computer if they are good boys)....and we fought them tooth and nail, but the women stop posting as they were re traumatized by these very ill people, the forums closed down. We could not get support from the carrier of the boards they told us ....these men had rights to express their opinions. This incident and some others made me know clearly there are people on the boards that are dangerous.....you need to be careful ....NOTE:.which causes me to have out burst if you are acting like a class a criminal, red flag,.....what is that? no respect for other opinions. Today thank god there are ways to kick these people out of your forums.....and stop the chaos and destruction they cause. God bless the moderators. I am new here, sorry if I offend anyone...as I know already people are wondering just who in the heck is this women!!! So for the first time I will put it out there my old life.....before the homestead.

Default wood stove

IMG_0221 by woodcarver.artist, on Flickr[/IMG] OK still working on the picture part.... I collect tons of things....that often are free or give to me. This is my rocket wood stove that I made with cement blocks and stove piping.... painted with Wallymarts folk paint cheap, cheap and that cat is iron lantern for candles. The rocket stove cooks with small amount of small branches, basic beginning fire stuff produces enough heat to cook without much smoke and no big fire if you want to cook. If you do not want any smoke I have heard of people putting in a long pipe system of various kinds which can be done by research on the net. The small tables made of 2 by 4s are great for holding food and various others things as they are solid.

Default rain barrel, multi fire cook area outside

IMG_0222 by woodcarver.artist, on Flickr[/IMG] This is a picture of my rain barrel it is just old planter that I drilled three holes into the sides to drain....there is rain gutter system that is hooked to trellis that takes the water to the yard to the rain barrel...it drops it on a copper rain chain links that I made of refri, copper tubing. The rain barrel drops water on ground that I made a small pathway to the fruit trees... The rain barrel can be easily plug to save water. But when it rains it is beautiful as it looks like a waterfall pouring into rain barrel which over flows fast....but the water is directed to the areas that need it, instead of flowing down the mountain. The cook area....has a Weber BQ grill without its legs...the Weber can be lift out for a fire place that will hold various items for fire cooked foods and pots and stands. This fireplace was made of cement blocks which I stucco and painted, they all so hold a rock system that can also be used for cooking...as much the same as pit fire cooking. Where I steam cook wrapping items in banana leaves. I have another fire pit on the other side of the house, which was the first one I made,... it is sealed on the bottom with cement....never do that as becomes a nice fish pond....but it can be used a fire place or a steam area with rocks, I just have to cover it to keep out the rain.
