Default Locking pin removal - Bush Hog quick attach coupli

The spring on the quick-locking pin that locks the PTO coupling onto the PTO is broken and must be replaced. How do I remove the pin mechanism in order to replace the broken spring?

(Bush Hog wants to charge me $16 for the answer after I have bought two rotary cutters from them!)

Please share what you found. I've never had that pin break but it would be nice to know what to do if I ever break one.

I think there's a set screw that holds it in place, but there are different designs, and I don't have any JD implements

I have a no-name brush hog hanging off an old IH tractor so who knows if it's anything like yours...

My PTO uses one of these pins...



But there are other designs, like this one



If one of those retaining springs snapped off, I'd probably get a punch and hammer and tap the pin out.

Mine is like this - the pin is spring loaded. You push the pin while sliding the coupling onto the PTO shaft on the tractor then release it when it is seated.

Interesting. And you don't have to worry about dropping the &*%$& pin into the tall grass and having to hunt for it. Not that that's ever happened to me...

But I can see how a broken spring in that design might be a problem. Now that I think about it, my PTO shaft does have a divot in the middle of all the splines along with the hole for the pin I use, so I could use one of those slick couplings when my shaft needs replacing.

Like said.... On the spring loaded pin on the yellow shaft end shown in the picture.... There has to be a set screw or roll pin of some kind to secure all that together... I don't have my post hole digger at home right now to go look...

When I have to use the D shape or BOX shaped pin with spring keeper, I always wire the spring keeper closed... I have used that kind of pin on through the spindle engine lathe fixtures... And you can turn them at 3-4000 rpm IF you have them wired shut... At 540 or 1000 rpm on a pto, I don't think they would ever be a problem...

At the higher speeds they make an interesting noise when they would bounce off the floor and then the ceiling of the machine shop...

The pin didn't break. The spring did. Once inserted into the coupling after sliding the new spring onto the pin and the pin is pressed so that the opposite end of the pin protruded, a snap ring fits on the end, and the snap ring catches the pin so that it does not shoot out, propelled by the new spring. Simple arrangement.
