Default Inheritance and Bill Pay Gov

Interesting story:

Seems like SS/gov is exempt from creditor filing rules/claim time re estates.

Medicaid:

Also, funeral directors will try to get you to pay for your relative(s) funeral bills if you're remotely related. (Had to tell one to take a hike).

With my step-MIL's estate I had to settle, same tricks came up but I told them waitt until the estate funds were being disbursed and I'd crank them out a check. (All under the guidance of a lawyer).

While SS is "off limits", banks do not always prevent a debt collector from seizing money when the collector gets a judgement.

Companies to whom the deceased owes money but has no estate will attempt to guilt survivors into paying the debt. People need to remember they are NOT responsible for debts incurred by parents, siblings, other relatives unless they co-signed the note or are a joint on the credit agreement.

Even with an estate (like with step-MIL) the funeral home went after us.

Just found some other ways to protect funds (hey, this feels like a full-time job, LOL).

Yeah - between stuff like this, protecting your health information, and trying to stay one step ahead of the hackers (credit cards etc.) it does take a lot of time and vigilance.
