Default Sweet words from a distant time

... I began at fourteen to learn the countryside craft. They taught me to saw upright and square, with the time-honoured threat of " hanging a plum-bob from my nose " when I erred. They taught me the peculiar art of sharpening a saw, the irregular teeth of which were once described as " sow and pigs ". With infinite patience they showed me how to plane wood straight, square and " out of wind; how to drive a nail home without splitting of leaving the indent of the hammer on the face of the wood; the purpose and use of the various tools, the art of sharpening the rounds, hollows and moulding planes, and the importance of keeping the left hand out of the danger zone when using a chisel, away from any slip that might occur. My neglect of this precaution resulted in a bad cut and a stiff finger joint, which remains stiff s a bailable reminder to this very day.
By Walter Rose ( 1871-1960) in his book the The Village Carpenter written 1938 .
I find out of long experience that I admire all nations and hate all governments- Steinbeck

I might have to look that book up, perhaps it would be a good inspiration when I start building stuff this season.

Thanks for the quote.
