Smile Greetings from Piney Woods Ranch

Hi Y'all,

(Even though we're originally from Chicago, that's how they tell us we should greet people)

We're aging baby-boomers that vacated the city/corporate life to "retire" into a new career of raising organic produce, eggs, and meat on a 40-acre piece of property in Texas' "Piney Woods" region. That's the Northeast corner of the state and we actually have trees and sometimes even grass here(!) This part of the state gets a fair amount of rain (YMMV) even so, the whole state has been under a drought for several years. This year, we may have broken that drought by getting as much rain by June as we are supposed to get in a year. (It took my driveway with it)

At any rate, we're living in a tiny cabin - 720 sq ft - heating exclusively with wood cut from our own woods, raising heritage breed pigs, chickens, and turkeys, and selling our organic meat, eggs, and produce at the local farmers' market.

We struggle with things like keeping plants watered, high organic feed bills, living in a tiny place (when you're used to twice that space it's a challenge!) living without a paycheck, making do with cast-off, improvised equipment, and staying motivated even though it looks like we'll run out of heartbeats before we run out of projects.

Check out our first post in the Homesteading forum if you have ideas for helping us make this play pay for itself. Wee need all the help we can get!
