Thank you for this JeepHammer! This is an excellent series of posts. Have you considered compiling this into a book? It’s great information! I thought I’d add a couple resources that I think might be helpful to anyone considering solar power.
PVWatts ( is a good source for anyone who want to measure the potential output of a system.
This site give you an idea of how solar prices vary across the U.S.:
There’s also a site called Solar to the People that I really like ( ) It can help you determine whether solar is right for you.

Yes lots of good information. I have lived off Grid for five years and made my own solar system. The first one is a 12 volt and the only reason I stayed with 12 volt was because the RV I bought just had a new 12 volt inverter in it. Everything is made where I can change it to 24 volt as soon as I can. I use as much 12 volt stuff that I can and it has really been a great system It provides us with every thing we need. The newest system is for my mother-in-law and it is a 24 volt system and is much better because I learned a lot from the first one. It is really getting a work out because she is on a oxygen concentrater. We have tried everything to get her on bottled oxygen and with the new insurance that will not ever happen. The biggest mistake I made on the first one was making the batteries where they are hard to work on and when I have time that will change.
