Default Growing up in the 40s....

On the thread about living without a fridge, GGrandma posted a reminiscence about "growing up in the '40s..." That reminded me of an author who has a frequent column in The Country Today weekly newspaper here in WI. He offers memories from his childhood, living on a farm without electricity:

Great link Doc , thanks. My earliest memories are of one room school houses , farming , church picnics in Southern Illinois hill farm country. We had electricity and frig but no freezer. Rented a meat locker in basement of the Kroeger store in town. When we butchered , took meat to the butcher there , they cut like mom wanted , wrapped in brown butcher paper and put in freezer. We had a key and brought meat home on Saturday for the week. Had running water in two places. Basement for the wringer washer and kitchen sink.

You went to a one room school? I always wondered what that would be like. I bet it gave kids more respect for each other and also a better education, the older kids having to help the younger ones. Nothing better to make you learn than to have to teach.

I went one roomers thru 5th grade. In fact first grade we only had 5 kids - me in first, two girls in 6th and two in 8th. Mt Summit closed after that and I went Ebenezer where it was 1-6with about 20 kids. Then it closed and we went to Rockwood- 4 rooms 1-4, 5-6, playroom and lunch room. Still only had one teacher. The teacher was Ms. Betty. Her husband , Merle, was mailman and picked us up In his Jeep morning and afternoon. I sat on the spare tire in back. . Rest of kids walked cause they were only a few miles away. We were about 5 miles out .

You couldn't get away with anything. Everyone went to same church on Sunday and if you did anything wrong- Ms Betty talked to mom and dad on Sunday.
