As in our past, which has now become a family tradition, we spent the morning of Mother’s Day at Byrnes Greenhouse in Zim, Minnesota. We meet up and visit while picking out a cartload of flowers and assorted plants. Granddaughter, Ava, loves to go and pick out plants for her fairy garden. But this year, she informed her mother she needed some of her garden for her own flowers! This is the kid who never leaves here without a pocket of bean seeds of various varieties, which she plants in their garden. Youngest granddaughter, Delilah, had fun, now that she can walk, walking up and down the aisles. I ask David why his jeans and shirt were so muddy and he pointed at Delilah. During her walks, she’d fall down in the muddy aisles, then climb up on Dad’s lap or have him pick her up. Grandson, Mason, worked hard as the carrier, taking chosen plants to various carts for the rest of us. Thanks, Mason! We barely had enough room in the car for all my plants. Bill brought his truck but Kelly didn’t fill it up. She said she’d gladly go back and work on that though!

David and Delilah enjoyed our Mother’s Day outing.

After all that plant buying, we gathered at the Wilbert Cafe, in Cotton, for brunch. It was packed, due to Mother’s Day, but we all sat at the horseshoe-shaped lunch counter and had a great visit while waiting for our food. We ate, visited and ate some more till we were stuffed. And, all too soon, we had to break up and head for home as Kelly and Elizabeth had to visit their mothers for Mother’s Day too. Tomorrow, I’ll start planting some of the plants I bought but most will have to wait until we have safe, frost-free nights.

Granddaugthter, Ava, gloats over their haul of flowers.
Will took the family photo after brunch.

We recently had a funeral for poor Spencer, as we’d been waiting for the ground to thaw out deep enough. Will dug with the dozer and afterward, I spread a lot of wildflower seeds on Spencer’s grave so we’d have a beautiful spot to remember him by. We’ll miss him as he was such a good friend for many years. — Jackie

  1. What a great day, and family! So fun watching your downline grow.

I have to pass along a mistake I made. I use the Earthway garden seeder for rows of corn etc. I read where we can soak the corn overnight, then plant, and I found out it won’t work in the seeder. The dry corn kernels worked well last year, so I know to only run dry seeds in it for all planting. So, its back to doing it the ‘old fashioned way’ with a hoe and that’s fine, just much slower.

    • Oooh! Using an Earthway seeder on soaked corn swells it so much it either skips, jams or damages the kernels. Hey, we all make mistakes!!

  2. Sounds like a good time had by all. I suggest a catnip plant or two around Spencer’s grave for his feline friends. Catnip flowers also attract bees.
Ava has an armful of Delilah, that’s for sure. And Mason all of a sudden is really tall – I couldn’t see that in the picture of the grandkids on your couch!

    • More taters coming up and blossom appearing on the strawberries. We had heat index of almost 100 today! Going to be in the 90s the rest of the week then high of 70s next week.

      • It’s been a little over-warm here, too; into the eighties, which I don’t like. But it’s dropping down to normal in a few days. Yup, Mason is now taller than Dad, which Mason gloats over! The catnip is a great idea.

  3. So glad you all had a good Mother’s Day celebration. My mother is 90 and with her last stroke cannot speak but knows everything. We communicate still in our own special way. I seem to know what she is asking and sometimes I even get a good word out of her. I made her laugh out loud when I told her Goodbye and to take care of herself. I said that I got to wear a red rose because she is still alive, and I don’t want to be wearing a white one next year.

    • I don’t blame you! Keep wearing that red one for years to come. I’m so glad you and your mother can still communicate. It’s amazing at the skills we can develop, isn’t it?

  4. Ava smiles as big as you, Jackie! She looks like her mom, but that smile is yours! God Bless!

  5. What do you mulch your flower beds with, hay or straw??? Have a new flower bed in cinder blocks and want to keep weeds out. To old to bend over and if I get down cannot get up.

It was 30 degrees this morning, so we will have to wait a few weeks before we can plant our vegetable garden. Plants are as beautiful as Ava’s smile.
    Thank you.

    • I use wood chips in my flower beds but the gardens get reed canary grass hay, which doesn’t have seeds.
We won’t be planting outside for weeks, as there’s always a sneaky spring frost.

    • Of course I think they’re so cute and wonderful, to boot! We had such a good day.

  6. Mother’s Day is a very dear day to my heart, as I lost my mom almost three years ago. But I am always thankful for the time I did get to spend with her.

Glad you could be with your family and make some good memories!

    • I lost Mom many years ago but still miss her. I brought her grave flowers for Mother’s Day and I know she’s looking down at me, wondering if I’ve got my daylilies planted yet!
