We remember when that pasture was nothing put brush and popple trees three years ago!<br \/>\nMeanwhile, I&#8217;m finishing planting the garden and getting ready to travel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midwestrenew.org\/energyfair\">MREA Fair<\/a> in Custer, Wisconsin, on Thursday.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be hanging out at the <em>BHM<\/em> booth so any of you that get the chance, please stop by and say hi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Cows-pasture.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2322\" title=\"Cows-pasture\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Cows-pasture.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Will&#8217;s busy building pig houses for our two gilts who are going to have baby pigs pretty soon.\u00a0 We have to get up fencing on the pasture, as well, so we&#8217;re hoping that they won&#8217;t farrow early!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Will-pig-house.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2323\" title=\"Will-pig-house\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Will-pig-house.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last week, we went to a friend&#8217;s dairy and bought five baby Holstein bull calves who were from a week old to only three days old. These folks have the nicest calves I&#8217;ve ever seen, anywhere!\u00a0 We&#8217;ll be raising them on the bottle until weaned.\u00a0 We&#8217;re developing a decent market for beef quarters and halves, cut and wrapped.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good deal for the buyer as they get good, naturally-raised farm beef for the price of store (yucky!) hamburger.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s a good deal for us too as we get more per pound than if we sold the butcher-sized calves at the auction barn.\u00a0 In today&#8217;s sagging economy, anything we can do that is moral, legal, and puts a few dollars back into our homestead is a good thing, indeed!\u00a0 Besides, both Will and I enjoy livestock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Calf-red-holstein.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2324\" title=\"Calf-red-holstein\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/JackieClay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Calf-red-holstein.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We turned our eight-month-old calves out to pasture on the old horse pasture a few days ago and we love watching them munch happily on the orchard grass and clover.\u00a0 What a satisfying feeling!
