\u201cI believe in the Second Amendment,\u201d President \u00a0Obama said last night in his second debate, and then revealed his true colors.\u00a0 (I thank the sincere lady who asked the question.) Obama said,\u201d\u2026 enforce laws we\u2019ve already got, keep guns out of hands of criminals\u2026I share your belief that weapons designed for war theater do not belong on the streets.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He admitted he wants to reintroduce the \u201cassault weapons ban,\u201d and admitted that in Chicago the bad guys are using cheap handguns instead of AK47s.\u00a0 He wants a \u201cComprehensive strategy\u201d to get \u201cautomatic weapons that kill in amazing numbers\u201d out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.<\/p>\n
Here at the blog, we\u2019ve gone around with some gun owners who insisted that because the President had not aggressively gone after them in his first term, he wouldn\u2019t in the second.\u00a0 I warned you that he WOULD as soon as he was re-elected. Shouldn\u2019t be a surprise: we warned you here that it\u2019s right there in the Democratic party platform.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s good to see him out of the closet now. Expect his \u201cassault weapons ban\u201d to cover any shotgun which \u201ccan be retrofitted\u201d with an extended magazine\u2026which means about every pump gun since the late 19th<\/sup> Century, and almost every autoloading shotgun, like your great grandpa\u2019s Browning Automatic Five.\u00a0 Expect it to ban pistols and rifles which \u201ccan be\u201d used with high capacity magazines\u2026which is just about all of them, from that same great grandpa\u2019s World War I .45 to the Remington 740 series, one of America\u2019s most popular deer rifles for sixty or more years.\u00a0 And so on.\u00a0 If possession of existing specimens is grandfathered but no new ones can be transferred, that means you can\u2019t sell the ones you have or will them to your kids.<\/p>\n Romney says he\u2019s not in favor of new legislation, noting automatic weapons are \u201calready illegal.\u201d Though the Republican apparently doesn\u2019t realize that in most states law-abiding citizens can own Class III weapons, that\u2019s nowhere near the Democrat\u2019s level of ignorance in not being able to tell automatic (machine guns) from semiautomatic.\u00a0 Romney brought up Fast and Furious at last, pointing out that Obama used executive privilege. Obama managed to dance away from that one: clever style, but a bit disingenuous. Why was Romney no longer in favor of banning assault weapons? He claimed pro and anti came together for the bill.\u00a0 \u201cIt was a mutually agreed upon piece of legislation,\u201d he said. (Sniff. Sniff.
