Cannily, the President surrounded himself with kids from early elementary school when he gave his \u201cgun control\u201d speech today.\u00a0 Since he speaks for the symbolism-side of this polarized debate, that was hardly unexpected.<\/p>\n
It was a shame the young ones didn\u2019t get the chance to discuss it themselves.\u00a0 Suppose you asked a second-grader, \u201cKids, if a bad boy in your class took crayons and wrote all over the walls of your classroom, would it be right to take the crayons away from the boys and girls who behaved?\u201d<\/p>\n
I suspect the children would unanimously answer, \u201cNo! That\u2019s not fair!\u00a0 Take them away from the boy who did the bad thing, not the rest of us!\u201d<\/p>\n
And of course, they might also ask, \u201cWhere was the teacher?\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t the teacher stop the boy who did the bad thing with the crayons?\u201d<\/p>\n
THERE is the logical question: why wasn\u2019t someone there in Sandy Hook Elementary School who could stop Adam Lanza?\u00a0 Because we\u2019re not talking crayons here, we\u2019re talking innocent lives. The school custodian can scrub crayon graffiti from the school walls.\u00a0 We can never wash away the innocent blood that was spilled at Newtown, never paint over the grief of the bereaved.<\/p>\n
A few weeks ago, when NRA\u2019s Wayne LaPierre explained that his organization wanted armed security in schools, the mainstream media and the anti-gunners alike excoriated him.\u00a0 One New York tabloid devoted its front page to a headline that said something like, \u201cGun Nut: NRA Loon In Bizarre Rant.\u201d\u00a0 Yet this morning, our President said one of his own priorities was to put cops in schools in hopes of preventing a repeat of the Newtown Atrocity.\u00a0 Will the same New York tabloid run a headline tomorrow that reads, \u201cWhite House Loon In Bizarre Rant\u201d?<\/p>\n
Somehow, I doubt it.<\/p>\n
