{"id":2548,"date":"2014-01-04T07:19:19","date_gmt":"2014-01-04T11:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/?p=2548"},"modified":"2014-01-04T07:19:19","modified_gmt":"2014-01-04T11:19:19","slug":"new-gun-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/new-gun-season\/","title":{"rendered":"NEW GUN SEASON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>January is \u201cnew gun intro\u201d season in the firearms industry, with the major trade show mid-month being the stage:\u00a0 SHOT, the Shooting and Hunting Outdoor Trade Show.\u00a0 I won\u2019t be there this year (trial schedule conflict) but will try to keep you apprised of what I can find out remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Some new introductions will be window dressing, such as Mossberg\u2019s series of \u201cDuck Commander\u201d motif firearms, mostly shotguns with a couple of ARs thrown in.\u00a0 <em>(Exactly what AR15s have to do with ducks escapes me, unless it\u2019s suitability to amphibious operation, but\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Remington-R-51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2550 alignright\" alt=\"Remington-R-51\" src=\"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Remington-R-51-300x219.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some will be radical for their kind.\u00a0 Consider the Remington R51, a sleek 7+1-shot 9mm pistol with some elements of that company\u2019s famous old Model 51 design, including flat super-thin profile.\u00a0 There are profound differences, of course: the new one is locked breech in design, and built for 9mm Luger +P, while the original was a .380.\u00a0 Pundits who\u2019ve seen it are divided as to whether the design is \u201cretro\u201d or \u201cultra-modern.\u201d\u00a0 I see it as some of both.\u00a0 The swooping, sculptured lines and overall shape remind me of what \u201cfuturists\u201d who touched on guns half a century ago predicted pistols might look like today.<em> (An interesting taste of that can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/01\/02\/isaac-asimov-2014_n_4530785.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl2%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D425889\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> , though Asimov didn\u2019t touch on firearms.)<\/em> Price point is remarkably low, and I for one am looking forward to putting one of these new Remington pistols through its paces.<\/p>\n<p>Since December, I\u2019ve been working with a couple of guns I can\u2019t talk about yet.\u00a0 The manufacturer is so serious about the \u201cmedia embargo\u201d going through to January 6 that I\u2019ve had to have everyone on my test team sign non-disclosure agreements from the company.\u00a0 One is an especially interesting departure for the manufacturer in question, while the other is much more evolution than revolution, and all of us who are shooting them like them but can only hold our hands over our mouths and mutter, \u201cMmmff.\u00a0 Mmmff!\u201d\u00a0 Will have more to say on these next week when the embargo lifts.<\/p>\n<p>So far, advance press releases to us gun writers indicate a lot of minor and often cosmetic changes, but there\u2019s always something that represents at least a small step forward, if not a giant leap.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about the new stuff more this month as all of it unfolds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January is \u201cnew gun intro\u201d season in the firearms industry, with the major trade show mid-month being the stage:\u00a0 SHOT, the Shooting and Hunting Outdoor Trade Show.\u00a0 I won\u2019t be there this year (trial schedule conflict) but will try to keep you apprised of what I can find out remotely.
