This coming weekend, the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference will take place, bringing together the best and the brightest in the gun owners civil rights movement.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be getting the inside dope from the most important current battles and court cases, from the people who are making them happen.\u00a0 Added bonus: Sunday afternoon will be a long \u201cgrassroots advocacy\u201d workshop, with tips from the various state activists on what they\u2019ve found to be the most successful approaches and strategies for working with state as well as national legislators.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve mentioned this no-charge-to-attend conference before in this blog.\u00a0 A couple of very good points have come up from folks who are reluctant to attend\u2026because it\u2019s in Chicago.<\/p>\n
One of those points was, \u201cWhy Chicago, one of the most anti-gun cities in America? I don\u2019t want to spend my dollars there!\u201d\u00a0 The answer is, first, it\u2019s for the same reason both Chicago and San Francisco have been the host cities for successful GRPCs in recent years: it\u2019s a symbolic gesture to hold the conference defiantly \u201cbehind enemy lines.\u201d\u00a0 And, second, this time around in Chicago it\u2019s a celebration of triumph. Second Amendment Foundation, one of the hosts along with Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, was instrumental in the tremendous US Supreme Court victory in McDonald, et. al. v. City of Chicago, <\/em>and in winning concealed carry in the State of Illinois.\u00a0 A thumbing of the nose at the anti-gunners? Yeah, you could say that\u2026<\/p>\n The other point was, \u201cTo heck with going to Chicago for that! I\u2019m an armed citizen, I don\u2019t live in Illinois, they\u2019re not issuing non-resident carry permits to out-of-staters there yet, and just on principle I won\u2019t go anyplace that doesn\u2019t trust me to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n Ya know what?\u00a0 I totally sympathize with that, and if that\u2019s why you\u2019re not attending, I don\u2019t blame you one damn bit.\u00a0 When I was a little boy, my mother told me \u201cSon, do not go places where you are not wanted.\u201d \u00a0That turned out to be very good advice.
