{"id":3375,"date":"2015-11-16T01:18:05","date_gmt":"2015-11-16T05:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/?p=3375"},"modified":"2015-11-16T01:18:05","modified_gmt":"2015-11-16T05:18:05","slug":"reading-between-the-lines-of-firearms-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/reading-between-the-lines-of-firearms-law\/","title":{"rendered":"READING BETWEEN THE LINES OF FIREARMS LAW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The six-day Legal Eagles seminar continued on Sunday with a powerful all-day presentation by attorney Mitch Vilos, author of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Self-Defense-Laws-All-States-2nd-ebook\/dp\/B00GRXUNJ2\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1447650992&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Mitch+vilos\" target=\"_blank\">Self-Defense Laws of All Fifty States.<\/a>\u201d Mitch specializes in firearms law and has done a hundred or more such cases himself as trial lawyer, and has studied hundreds more such cases for research.\u00a0 He has discovered the epiphany almost every attorney experiences in the courtroom:\u00a0 law school teaches you the law, not trial tactics.\u00a0 The latter is something that is learned on the job, or in specialized in-service training known as CLE (continuing legal education).<a href=\"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/M_Vilos.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3371\" src=\"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/M_Vilos.jpg\" alt=\"M_Vilos\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/M_Vilos.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/M_Vilos-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/M_Vilos-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mitch is smart, he\u2019s funny (in a good way), and he\u2019s a voice of experience. He pointed out that the defenses-with-firearms which seem to cause the least trouble to the good person with the gun are those involving home defense, interdiction of mass murder, and fighting off armed robbers.\u00a0 The <em>least <\/em>defensible are those in which the defendant might be seen as \u201cthe initial aggressor,\u201d or those in which the defendant was doing something illegal at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those epiphanies are counter-intuitive. Mitch, like veteran defense lawyer Jim Fleming who spoke the day before him, has found that cops make wonderfully favorable jurors in self-defense shooting cases.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just the tiniest sample of the experiential wisdom for which the dozens of attendees are paying a well-spent $3,000 over the course of this six-day seminar. It wouldn\u2019t be right for me to give it all away here.<\/p>\n<p>Let me share another bit of Mitch Vilos\u2019 wisdom.
