{"id":3977,"date":"2008-06-29T06:52:34","date_gmt":"2008-06-29T10:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/?p=61"},"modified":"2008-06-29T06:52:34","modified_gmt":"2008-06-29T10:52:34","slug":"reflections-on-heller-part-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/reflections-on-heller-part-one\/","title":{"rendered":"REFLECTIONS ON HELLER, Part One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>Ever since I was a kid, I was frustrated by clueless people who said, \u201cThe Second Amendment is about the National Guard or something.\u201d<span> <\/span>Yeah, right\u2026as if one of the most carefully crafted documents in the history of the human experience, devoted to individual human rights, would somehow have strangely included states\u2019 rights to raise militias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>For decades, Constitutional scholars have again and again determined that The Second did indeed speak to an individual right. Our current President\u2019s first Attorney General stated that in an official opinion.<span> <\/span>It was obvious to anyone who didn\u2019t have an agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>Now, at long, long last, the Supreme Court of the United States has spoken.<span> <\/span>They have confirmed \u2013 hopefully once and for all \u2013 that the Second Amendment is indeed an <em>individual <\/em>\u201cright to keep and bear arms.\u201d<span> <\/span>It is truly historic, a genuine \u201clandmark decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>The fallout was instantaneous.<span> <\/span>In Chicago, literally fifteen minutes after the SCOTUS decision was announced, the Second Amendment Foundation and the Illinois State Rifle Association pulled the trigger of an already cocked hammer, a lawsuit challenging the Constitutionality of Chicago\u2019s long standing ban on law-abiding citizens\u2019 ownership of handguns.<span> <\/span>Early indications are that the <em>Heller <\/em>decision, in shooting down (pun intended) Washington, DC\u2019s similar ban, will make the termination of Chicago\u2019s current, onerous law a slam-dunk.<span> <\/span>Chicago\u2019s Mayor Richard Daley, raving against the decision, literally experienced a meltdown in his emotional press conference. The guy was practically babbling.<span> <\/span>Always a good thing to see in someone who has declared himself an enemy of you and your kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>The decision came down on the first day of a Lethal Force Institute LFI-I class I was teaching in Harrisburg,  PA. The 28 adult students literally cheered.<span> <\/span>Well, we had all waited a long time to hear this decision.
