January 9,\n2019 would have been my mother\u2019s 110th<\/sup> birthday. She was ten years\nold when the Volstead Act was passed, triggering the long American nightmare of\nProhibition.  She and my dad both lived\nthrough it, and saw its negative effects (huge) and its positive effects\n(virtually non-existent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother\nwas a lifelong teetotaler.  She analyzed\nProhibition, not with personal feelings, but with logic.  She was one of three sisters, with a couple\nof brothers. Her mom, my great-grandmother who passed before I was born, always\ncalled her \u201cthe practical one\u201d of the family. Great-grandma was right. My\nmother saw for herself that Prohibition simply didn\u2019t work \u2026 and that it had\n\u201cunintended consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black\nmarket was a boon for bootleggers and moonshiners, and led to organized crime\nin America on an unprecedented scale. Organized crime turned to drug-running\nwholesale as soon as Repeal was passed in 1933. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One reason\nFranklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President was his promise that he would\nrepeal Prohibition.  FDR, let us\nremember, is seen today as a \u201cprogressive Democrat,\u201d and some called him a\nsocialist then and now.  Today, however,\nsocialists (some self-admitted, some not) and self-styled progressive Democrats\ncall for a different kind of Prohibition: that of firearms that existed even\nbefore the Volstead Act became law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nancy Pelosi\nhas promised that as Speaker of the House, she will make \u201cgun control\u201d a very\nhigh priority.  She and her kind are\ntalking about banning most semiautomatic firearms, magazines that hold more\nthan ten rounds, and private transfer of firearms between law-abiding\nindividual citizens.  Her agenda will\nrepeat the reality of that last Prohibition: take things away from law-abiding\ncitizens who use them responsibly, while flat-out KNOWING that law-breakers, by\ndefinition, will not obey the empty law in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Volstead\nAct criminalized a vast number of American citizens who had responsibly\nconsumed alcohol, just as the upcoming spate of Pelosi-led prohibition will\ncriminalize a huge number of law-abiding citizens who have responsibly owned\nand used the firearms and accessories in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prohibition resulted in massive non-compliance. Indeed, drinking in a speakeasy or sipping booze from a flask at a sporting event became seen as an act of individual freedom and defiance.  If you doubt that the same will happen with firearm and magazine bans, you haven\u2019t seen this<\/a>.<\/g><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with the Prohibition that began a century ago, the New Prohibition will lead to a vast black market of firearms, and illicit manufacture of same. (Speaker Pelosi, don\u2019t you think the rise of the 3-D Printing you so rail against makes this a very bad time to hope to ban something that can be produced in America\u2019s garages?\u00a0 If you thought bathtub gin was a problem, wait \u2018til you see backyard submachineguns, which Third World insurgents have long known can be built by anyone with access to a Bridgeport milling machine and a few other tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
