When pieces\no\u2019 feces like the one at Parkland wreak mass murders, we in the gun owners\u2019\ncivil rights movement are the first to say, \u201cWe need psycho control, not gun\ncontrol.\u201d When so-called Red Flag laws\nare proposed that would disarm someone when damn near anyone says, \u201cthat person\nis crazy and dangerous,\u201d we look like hypocrites when we say, \u201cWait a minute!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it\u2019s not\nhypocrisy. We\u2019re resistant because\nthese proposals \u2013 at least all the ones I\u2019ve seen \u2013 are too hastily written,\nand dangerously lacking in checks and balances. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSWAT-ing\u201d\nhas become a thing. It\u2019s a form of harassment in which the hater makes a false\ncall to police claiming that some horrible crime is happening at the victim\u2019s\nhome, with the result that armed police in a high state of danger alert respond\nthere. It has already caused tragic,\nunnecessary death. Long before this\ntrend, bitter and hateful people were making false complaints to police and the\ncourts: any experienced cop can confirm that, and so can any divorce lawyer who\nhas practiced family law for any length of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anti-gunners\non Facebook and elsewhere have claimed that any time they spot a gun on\nsomeone, they will attack them (and that has actually happened) or they will\ncall 9-1-1 with a \u201cHelp! Man with a gun!\u201d call. \nWhat would such people do if they believed a simple phone call could get\na gun owner \u2013 and his or her firearms \u2013 seized? The potential for abuse is\nobvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Too many of\nthe proposals would take a single accuser\u2019s word as truth. Let\u2019s say Marvin the\nMonster is stalking Vickie the Victim. \nHe calls in and claims that Vickie is out of her mind and has threatened\nhim with a gun. Vickie\u2019s guns are\nautomatically seized. It will be at\nleast days before she can have a hearing, be cleared, and get them back\u2026and for\nevery minute of all those days she is helpless to protect herself from Marvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Red Flag\nlaws need to be done right, and that won\u2019t happen unless our side goes beyond\nknee-jerk opposition and has a hand in formulating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Input from professionals seems to be lacking in the proposals I\u2019ve seen thus far.\u00a0 I would like to see a blue ribbon panel of knowledgeable psychologists and psychiatrists \u2013 Dr. William Aprill in Louisiana, Dr. Alexis Artwohl in Arizona, and Dr. Anthony Semone in Pennsylvania all come to mind \u2013 study this issue and make some professional recommendations from their field of expertise. Similarly, I want to hear from police administrators on logistical elements: someone like this Colorado sheriff<\/a>, who has a handle on it.
