Couldn\u2019t stay for\nthe awards ceremony and will have to get back to you later on who won what, but\non the return trip I was ruminating about some of the lessons learned and\nreinforced watching 150 or so skilled shooters running their guns under\npressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Take your time, quick. <\/strong>&nbsp;Wyatt Earp, Bill Jordan, and Texas Ranger John\nHayes all said that about gunfighting, if not in the exact same words. Ross\nSeyfried, the second American after my late, great mentor Ray Chapman to win\nthe world championship in combat shooting, was famous for saying \u201cYou can\u2019t\nmiss fast enough to win.\u201d&nbsp; The sniper\u2019s\nmantra \u201cOne shot, one kill\u201d reinforces the point.&nbsp; If you want to do well, don\u2019t shoot faster\nthan you can hit what you\u2019re shooting at.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Massad Ayoob at the Pin Shoot 2019\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8c6WdM8wGJ0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Shooting the Stock Gun event. (opens in a new tab)\">Video Here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t let anyone tell you that you\ncan\u2019t shoot powerful guns quickly. <\/strong>You just have to know how.&nbsp;\nAs the aforementioned Chapman liked to say, \u201cYou just have to be smarter\nthan the gun.\u201d We saw some incredible times on the Big Push event, where three\nbowling pins have to be blasted fourteen feet back to clear the table they rest\non.&nbsp; This requires powerful guns: we saw\n.50 caliber Desert Eagles, a gigantic BFR revolver firing the .450 Marlin big\ngame rifle cartridge, and most popular, the giant X-frame Smith &amp; Wesson\nrevolvers in .460 and .500 Magnum. (opens in a new tab)\">Video Here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Age doesn\u2019t matter. <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019ve had some millennial age shooters do great here (the Hauserman family includes more than one such), and some great-shooting geezers, and every age group in between. The year Ken Tapp set a record in this pin game some quarter century ago, he was 63.\u00a0 Craig Wood and I have been shooting against each other for decades, since back when he was a Vermont state trooper and I was a young municipal cop in New Hampshire.
