There\u2019s a\nlot of crappy gun advice out there.  One\nexample I hear all the time is, \u201cLoad your home defense shotgun with birdshot.\nIt\u2019ll mess up the home invader, but it won\u2019t go through the walls and endanger\nyour children.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me get\nthis straight. You can put your fist through sheetrock, but try as I have on\noccasion, I\u2019ve never been able to put my fist through <\/em>a human opponent.\nAnd if what you\u2019re shooting will <\/em>go deep enough into a large, aggressive\nhuman male to stop him, what makes anyone think it won\u2019t<\/em> go through\nsheetrock, and in any case what are they doing firing in a direction where\ntheir children\u2019s bedrooms are the backstop?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I said as much back in the 1980s when I wrote \u201cStressFire II: Advanced Combat Shotgun<\/a>,\u201d and I stand by that advice today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greg Ellifritz, one of the brightest stars in modern\nself-defense training today, agrees. Here\u2019s what he had to say on the matter\nlast week in his very useful blog:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My recommendation is #1 buckshot in the standard \u201cexpress\u201d\nload for the 12 gauge semiautomatic defense shotgun: 16 .30 caliber projectiles\nthat seem to give optimum penetration in homicidal humans and in most shotguns\nI\u2019ve tried it in, optimum pattern density. \nI seldom see an autoloading shotgun that is absolutely reliable with the\nlighter \u201clow recoil\u201d or \u201ctactical\u201d loads, but those work fine in pump guns and\nof course give softer recoil. The Federal #1 Buck low recoil load is hard to\nfind, but worth looking for.  In a 20\ngauge, the most readily available buckshot load is #3, which consists of 20 .25\ncaliber pellets, and at home defense distances, that\u2019ll do.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure the home defense plan is for the family to hunker\ndown if there\u2019s a home invasion, and you have pre-planned an interdiction point\nat which to confront the intruder(s) where you have cover, they don\u2019t, and your\nloved ones aren\u2019t anywhere in your \u201cshooting background.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
