The reason\nis, the Evil Princess and I fled frozen wastelands for the warmth of the South,\nand are about to pay our tax on that: hurricane season. As I write this, where we live is dead center\nin the crosshairs of a Category Four storm, Hurricane Dorian, though there is\nhope that it will veer northward and hopefully out to sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the\nlast few years, she and I have dodged a lot of weather bullets, including a\ncouple of hurricanes. It looks as if our\n\u201cweather bill\u201d is about to become due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, I\napologize if I\u2019m not blogging much for a while. The last few hurricanes where\nwe are have knocked out power for a week or so at a time. Hope you\u2019ll bear with us if, as expected,\nthat happens this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We\u2019re good\non generator, fuel for it and the vehicles, batteries, medicals, food and water\nand sanitation and all of that. Stocked up on large print books, easy to read\nin sub-optimal lighting. Neighbors and local friends will be looking out for\none other. We don\u2019t expect looting in\nthis community, but guns? Um, oddly\nenough, we have some already\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As much as we Americans snipe at\nmeteorologists, the history of monster storms in the past is that they tended\nto hit unexpectedly and wreak horrible damage upon the unready; today, our\nweather scientists have given us ample warning of what\u2019s coming. We are as well prepared as we can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My friend\nChris Bird has written a number of excellent books, at least one of which you\nshould read if you haven\u2019t already. \nAptly titled \u201cThank God I Had A Gun,\u201d it consists of first-person\naccounts of good, ordinary people who saved themselves and others from murder\nbecause they were able to effectively shoot back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you think\nabout it, Chris could do a whole series of \u201cThank God I Had a (insert\nlife-saving emergency rescue gear here).\u201d \nThe principle is the same, whether you\u2019re endangered by forces of evil\nor forces of nature. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
