ED NOWICKI, SUPERCOP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sad tidings:\nthe passing this week of Ed Nowicki in Wisconsin.&nbsp; My career has brought me into contact with\nliterally thousands of cops.&nbsp; A very few\namong them deserved the title Supercop. Ed was one such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowicki\nbegan his career on the mean streets of Chicago in some of that city\u2019s most\nturbulent&nbsp; years.&nbsp; He not only survived, but prevailed in, six\ngunfights.&nbsp; He later became a chief of\npolice in a Wisconsin community, and even a lay judge.&nbsp; His life experience gave him an awesome\nperspective, both wide and deep, of criminal justice in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EdNowicki_01-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6062\" width=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EdNowicki_01-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EdNowicki_01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EdNowicki_01-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EdNowicki_01.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>In this 2005 photo, Ed Nowicki towered over me the way he towered over all of us in the police training world <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressive\nas he was as a street cop and a leader of police, his strongest point was\nteaching. Thugs were terrified of him because he had not only imposing size and\nstrength, but a deep knowledge of the fighting arts.&nbsp; Students loved him because this bear of a man\ncould teach the smallest, weakest officer how to prevail using leverage,\nforce-multiplying tools, and above all, cool competence under life-threatening\npressure.&nbsp; He taught that compassion and\nreason had to accompany the ability to use all levels of force.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been no greater leader in law enforcement training in my lifetime. I met Ed in the late 1970s when we both taught at the Monadnock PR-24 Baton Instructors\u2019 Seminar, held annually back then at OPOTA, the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.\u00a0 In the latter 1980s, he was the leader who formed ASLET, the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers.\u00a0 In the early 2000s, when internecine warfare threatened that organization, he created <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ILEETA (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ileeta.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ILEETA<\/a>, the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association.\u00a0 When ASLET sank in 2006, ILEETA became the lifeboat that picked up the survivors, and continues today as the world\u2019s premier multi-disciplinary law enforcement training organization under Ed\u2019s chosen successor, Harvey Hedden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed had spent\nmany years fighting the terrible, debilitating disease that finally killed him\nall too soon.&nbsp; He leaves a legacy of\nprofessionalism and advancement in law enforcement training that will never be\nequaled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deepest\ncondolences to his widow, Dianne, and his fine family.&nbsp; All of us in the training sector should\nstrive to continue his legacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sad tidings: the passing this week of Ed Nowicki in Wisconsin.&nbsp; My career has brought me into contact with literally thousands of cops.&nbsp; A very few among them deserved the title Supercop.
