It\u2019s about\nthat time of year when all bloggers offer up Merry Christmas posts. OK, here\u2019s\na Christmas present for you: some nuggets of solid gold from Dr. William\nAprill\u2019s presentation at our Massad Ayoob Group Reunion in early December.\nWilliam is a former cop, long since a psychologist, and deeply experienced with\nanalyzing both victims and perpetrators. His message was so important we put\nhim on the schedule twice: Once on how predators select victims, and again on\nwhat might be called \u201cthe face of the enemy.\u201d \nSome of those nuggets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRandom acts\nare opportunistic.  A man trying each car\ndoor he comes to is systematic, not random. \nMost criminal repertoires are far from mindless.  Suitable target + inefficient guardian =\ncrime,\u201d William explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Dr. Aprill: \u201cRapists are looking for passive\nand submissive victims.  Rapists love to\ntalk about themselves. One told me, \u2018Ya gotta find one who\u2019ll go easy.\u2019  Another liked to walk up to couples, take\nthem at gunpoint, and rape the woman in front of the man.  The rapist had done this to one couple and\nthe intended male victim, a doctor I actually knew, drew a gun on him and the\nman fled.  I asked the man why he ran\naway and didn\u2019t try to shoot the doctor. The rapist answered, \u2018I didn\u2019t want\ntrouble, man.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aprill\nadvised, \u201cFocus on not being chosen. They look for \u2018babyfacedness\u2019 because\nyouth implies inexperience. They watch for what our colleague John Farnam calls\n\u2018dithering.\u2019 Predators select victims who appear distractable, scattered,\nmultitasking.  Someone who might be\nsusceptible to \u2018Let me help you with that.\u2019 \nOne of my patients was raped and beaten into a coma in her own home. She\nsaid her attacker seemed \u2018playfully aggressive\u2019 as he took the bags out of her\narms, a clean-cut guy in button down shirt. He carried her stuff to her car and\nasked, \u2018So, where do you live?\u2019 She reflexively told him the area, and he said\n\u2018What a coincidence, I live near there, can you give me a ride home?\u2019 She\ndidn\u2019t want to take back trust she had extended\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn\u2019t\nsound very Christmas-y?  Consider\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a season where a byword is \u201cPeace on Earth, good will toward men,\u201d we would all do well to remind our peaceful loved ones that not everyone around them bears them that good will.\u00a0 Whether you believe it was God or Nature who gave you life, that life is your most precious gift.
