In some ways, it was the most important. I remember the gentleman who \u201cdropped dead\u201d at a\nshooting match I attended in while still in my teens. Nothing like that was\navailable for ordinary folks acting as first responders then.&nbsp; He didn\u2019t make it.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it ain\u2019t\njust for the range: we keep all the same gear in the car.&nbsp; The Evil Princess, a retired RN, generally\nhas her tourniquet\/field dressing\/Quickclot\u2122 on her person in an ankle\nrig.&nbsp; We carry guns in case we have to\ndeal with someone trying to kill us or another innocent party. Even if we\nprevail against him, he may have already harmed at least one victim.&nbsp; The emergency medical service is hampered by\nthe same laws of time and space as the police service, and often, the citizen\non the ground where it happens is the only one who\u2019ll have a chance to save a\nfading life\u2026<em>if <\/em>that citizen is both\ntrained and equipped to deal with the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of\ncourse, it\u2019s not limited to combat situations. Even in recreational shooting,\nwe have to remember that we\u2019re handling dangerous equipment. Accidents happen.\nThe injuries are similar, however they may be inflicted.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not\nlimited to guns, either. The one time I had to give CPR was in a big city train\nstation. If you are in a rural area, remote from emergency medical service, ask\nyourself how often you and yours are exposed to major trauma. Accidental\nimpairment. A slip of the ax or the chainsaw.&nbsp;\nA bite, kick, or goring inflicted by livestock or even family pets and\nworking animals. The principles are the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When any of\nthese things happen, <em>we<\/em> may be the\nvictim, and <em>alone. <\/em>Stacy Kitchens\npaid particular attention to self-application of the tourniquet and everything\nelse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacy is a\ngreat instructor.
