{"id":6155,"date":"2020-02-17T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/?p=6155"},"modified":"2020-02-08T22:41:32","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T03:41:32","slug":"a-must-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/a-must-read\/","title":{"rendered":"A MUST-READ"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To my mind,\n\u201cmust-read\u201d is a greatly over-used term in book reviewing, so I use it as\nsparingly as I can.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the\nfirst edition of \u201cDeadly Force Encounters\u201d came out, I considered it a\nmust-read. The Portland (Oregon) Police Bureau has produced many fine\nalumni.&nbsp; Two of them are Dr. Alexis\nArtwohl, who was their police psychologist, and Loren Christensen, a legendary\nstreet cop who spent much of his career in the worst, toughest part of\ntown.&nbsp; Their combined insights were what\nmade the book great.&nbsp; Alexis\u2019 most\nimportant contribution was her insight into the perceptions and the emotional\naftermaths of officers she debriefed and treated after they were forced to\nshoot people in the line of duty, and occasionally got shot themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deadly-Force-Encounters-Second-Themselves\/dp\/1650012195\/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Artwohl_Christensen.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6156\" width=\"250\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Artwohl_Christensen.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.backwoodshome.com\/blogs\/MassadAyoob\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Artwohl_Christensen-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve\ncorresponded with Loren though we\u2019ve never met face to face.&nbsp; Alexis and I have taken one another\u2019s classes\nand served on some of the same boards and professional discussion panels. I can\ntell you they are both The Real Deal, and yes, those capital letters are\nwarranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year\nthey brought out their long-awaited updated version: \u201cDeadly Force Encounters,\nSecond Edition: Cops &amp; Citizens Defending Themselves and Others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s\neven better than the first one, in no small part because this edition embraces\nthe armed citizen as well as the law enforcement officer.&nbsp; I\u2019ve always considered the two to be natural\nallies, despite the forces on both ends of the political spectrum which have so\nlong tried to set them against each other\u2026something I see occasionally\nhappening here in the commentary section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you read\nthis blog, I think I can assume you are an armed citizen (or a past or present\npeace officer).&nbsp; It would be very much\nworth your time to have this book on hand to share with friends who\naren\u2019t.&nbsp; Alexis is quite possibly <em>the <\/em>most\nrespected police psychologist in the nation, and Loren is one of the most\nhighly respected practical martial arts and police defensive tactics\ninstructors.&nbsp; People need to hear from\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More \u201cMust-Read\u201d than ever, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"available from Amazon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deadly-Force-Encounters-Second-Themselves\/dp\/1650012195\/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8\" target=\"_blank\">available from Amazon<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deadly-Force-Encounters-Second-Themselves\/dp\/1650012195\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=16B5CQ5ZFQDQI&amp;keywords=deadly+force+encounters+second+edition&amp;qid=1580948143&amp;sprefix=Deadly+Force+Encounters+se%2Caps%2C161&amp;sr=8-1#customerReviews\">.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To my mind, \u201cmust-read\u201d is a greatly over-used term in book reviewing, so I use it as sparingly as I can.&nbsp; When the first edition of \u201cDeadly Force Encounters\u201d came out, I considered it a must-read.
