Political identity seems to be the curse of our time in this country, and \u201ccancel culture\u201d is a side effect.\u00a0 Even the left-of-center magazine The Atlantic <\/em>seems to realize it<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OK sign\na \u201csecret\u201d signal of the white supremacist movement? Really? <\/em>Do the snowflakes realize they are empowering racists by\nallowing them to co-opt a positive hand gesture that has been a part of\nAmerican culture since the early 1800s? \nIt means different things elsewhere. To some of my ancestors, I\u2019m told,\nit signified the Evil Eye: \u201cA curse on you and your children and the camel you\nrode in on.\u201d  Teaching in Latin America,\nI discovered the hard way that it was the sign of the maricon, <\/em>and was definitely not\n<\/em>taken as a sign of approval when I flashed it to the macho men I was there\nto teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My firearms\/self-defense\ntraining school has been called MAG, for Massad Ayoob Group, since 2009. I\nissue red caps with that logo to the range officers so the students can\nidentify them as part of the training staff. \nAt a recent class, one of the ROs told me, \u201cI better take this cap off\nbefore I go to supper.\u201d I must have given him a quizzical look, because he went\non to explain, \u201cThere are places around here where you can get attacked for\nwearing a red MAGA ball cap, and I want to avoid trouble.\u201d  Sigh\u2026he may have been right.  People stupid and dangerous enough to attack\nsomeone for wearing a logo cap probably are\n<\/em>too stupid to \u201cread the fine print.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anybody\nglares at me for wearing the red cap with my company\u2019s logo, maybe I should\njust give him the OK sign, to smooth the troubled waters\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
