We recently discussed here<\/a> the Ninth Circuit\u2019s decision that limiting private citizens to a magazine capacity of ten rounds was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Court\nreferred to them as LCMs, Large Capacity Magazines. We gun people call them Standard\nCapacity Magazines since that\u2019s what so many of the firearms in question \u2013\nhandguns, rifles, and even shotguns \u2013 were originally designed for.  It continues to amaze me that people whose\ncritical thinking skills are otherwise intact can\u2019t \u201cget it\u201d on this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, of\ncourse, is the utter stupidity of believing that criminals who are prepared to\ncommit murder and face life in prison without possibility of parole, or even\ncapital punishment, will somehow be deterred from breaking a magazine limit\nlaw. But let\u2019s look at the common questions of \u201cWhy do private citizens need\nmore than ten bullets to defend themselves? And if they do, why can\u2019t they just\nreload, or carry more guns?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For one\nthing, most home defense guns are stored in secure places and not carried on\none\u2019s person when at home.  A home\ninvasion can happen in seconds. When you grab the gun, it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll\nhave time to grab more ammunition: what\u2019s in it at the start is probably all\nyou\u2019ll have until it\u2019s over, one way or the other.  Do you want the two rounds in a Joe Biden\nSignature Model double barrel shotgun against three or more armed home\ninvaders?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For another,\nviolent criminals running on adrenaline and often drugs and alcohol can soak up\nbullet after bullet before they run out of blood or a lucky hit short-circuits\ntheir central nervous system.  More bad\nguys wear body armor today than in the time of John Dillinger: current news\nshows violent Antifas wearing it openly. \nAnd surgical bullet placement for a single bullet in tense life-or-death\ncircumstances is more the exception than the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magazine limits have a disproportionate, disparate impact against the elderly and the handicapped.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard enough for someone in a wheelchair to get to a gun at all, never mind packing spare magazines or extra guns. And how does the wheelchair-bound victim get to cover to reload in any case? I can testify from experience that arthritic hands slow you down, too. How much of a nightmare is it to run out of ammo when you\u2019re trying to save your family from a home invader? This article<\/a> will give you an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your\nstate has a magazine capacity limit, the recent Ninth Circuit decision cited\nabove offers some hope for the future. If your state allows you to have\nstandard capacity magazines, fight like hell to keep them when, as they\neventually will, Prohibitionists attempt to prohibit them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
