I took her at her word,\u00a0and feasted\u00a0on my first salmon BLT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&#8230;\u201dSal-mon?\u201d With a distinct \u201cL\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ain\u2019t the first time I\u2019ve heard that. Where I grew up, it was always pronounced \u201csammon,\u201d with\u00a0the \u201cL\u201d silent, and I still say it that way. At the restaurant or market, they always\u00a0know what I\u2019m\u00a0talking about and so far, I haven\u2019t been given the wrong fish yet after asking for \u201csammon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see mispronunciations in the gun world all the time. The M-1 Garand rifle was always\u00a0pronounced \u201cGuh-RAND\u201d when I was growing up,\u00a0but those who knew the M-1\u2019s inventor say\u00a0he pronounced his own name \u201cGA-rand.\u201d It\u2019s generally accepted, on the other hand, that the\u00a0popular German brand Heckler &amp; Koch is properly said \u201cCoke\u201d for the latter name, not \u201cKotch.\u201dThe Italian Carcano military rifle is usually pronounce \u201cCar-CAN-oh\u201d in this country, but some\u00a0experts insist that it should be \u201cCAR-can-oh.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us own lever action carbines.  Is it &#8220;LEE-ver&#8221; or &#8220;LEH-ver?&#8221; &#8220;Car-BEEN&#8221; or &#8220;car-BYNE?&#8221; Or maybe &#8220;CAR-been&#8221; or &#8220;CAR-byne?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I won\u2019t even get into the various pronunciations of Latin\u00a0words and\u00a0phrases in various\u00a0American environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m curious: tell me how\u00a0you\u00a0pronounce the words mentioned above, and feel free to share\u00a0other conflicting pronunciations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my house, the word the Evil Princess of Podcasts, Pixels, and Polymer Pistols argues with me\u00a0about the most is \u201cniche.\u201d Perhaps it\u2019s because I grew up in New Hampshire which\u00a0has a large Franco-American population, but I have always pronounced it \u201cneesh.\u201d However,\u00a0my lovely bride, who was born in Chicago until I\u00a0<s>kidnapped<\/s> rescued her, insist that it is properly\u00a0spoken as \u201cnitch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With us, it sounds like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cNeesh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her: \u201cNitch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me: \u201cNeesh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her:\u00a0\u201cNitch!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me:\u00a0Beesh&#8230;(Uttered softly, so she won\u2019t hear me, and hurt me&#8230;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, the wife and I were having dinner with another couple tonight, and our pleasant young\u00a0waitress told us that something called \u201csal-mon\u201d was good.
