It was, though I wasn\u2019t particularly good at it. I didn\u2019t stay with it because at 23 I became a law enforcement firearms instructor, and clay discs hurtling across the sky didn\u2019t seem relevant: I figured that if I started seeing small flying criminals, I wanted someone to take my shotgun <em>away<\/em> from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sporting Clays is a sport that came along much later, when I was committed to other shooting disciplines. Looking back, I wish it had existed when I was in my teens: I would have loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just finished reading \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4lLkUkt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shooting Sporting Clays<\/a>\u201d by Mark Brannon and Tom Hanrahan, and I can\u2019t imagine a better introduction to this challenging gun sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How challenging? In his introduction, multiple time national champion of the game writes, \u201cThis is the only book to my knowledge that explores all facets of sporting clays. The complexity and dynamic of sporting clays can be a bit overwhelming for new shooters, but this book will surely help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems to me that Sporting Clays is to trap and skeet as practical shooting\/combat shooting sports are to traditional pistol matches: the shooter faces scenarios relevant to real life use of guns, dynamically, in this case in the hunting fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scenarios are field-related, from very high \u201cbirds\u201d to \u201crabbits\u201d skipping across the ground. There are multiple sizes of clay targets that have to be busted by the birdshot charge, coming from unpredictable angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I found \u201cShooting Sporting Clays\u201d fascinating reading as a shooter not in the game, I can only imagine how useful it would be for someone starting out in this challenging sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great reading for sport shooters!
