I think I\u2019ve mentioned in the past the pitfalls of having a gun in New York State, and people getting arrested for illegal possession when they checked in at an airport counter and didn\u2019t have NY state issued paper for it.\u00a0\u00a0This story comes from my friend John, a retired cop in California:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While packing, I noticed some issues with my Compact .45 and immediately sent it out for repair. The only other suitable firearm I owned was my old Detective Special\u2014that I owned since the early 1980\u2019s. (And when I mean suitable: I had fresh ammo and a suitable holster.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Thankfully, we encountered no issues while in NYC, and we headed to JFK to fly home. At the ticket counter I declared an unloaded firearm in my luggage. And as you well know, that is proper and legal.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ticket agent asks for a NYS Pistol Permit, which I don\u2019t have. \u201cSo you\u2019re law enforcement?\u201d I told him I\u2019m retired and authorized in all 50-states.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWait here\u2014the police have been notified!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n A few minutes later, a pair of young Port Authority cops arrive. I show my retired ID\u2014which passes muster.
