It\u2019s not just a clich\u00e9 to say that the children are the future. With the rights of law-abiding firearms owners constantly under attack, it\u2019s politically more important than ever to teach the young not only gun safety, but the value of firearms to them when they become the responsible adults we want them to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the Pin Shoot in Michigan recently, it pleased me greatly to watch one ten-year-old boy keep pace with the adults with his pistol caliber carbine. My wife and I clapped our hardest when we watched young Dakota Hauserman called to the prize table for her winning score in the Space Gun division, shot with full powered handguns with optical sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Psychologists tell us the young crave two things they don\u2019t have yet: power and responsibility. The gun is the very symbol of both. For me it was a tool of parenting that let my children learn that privilege was power that demanded responsibility, and that the more responsibility they demonstrated the more power and privilege they would be entrusted with. My kids both won weapons by skillfully using weapons at those shooting matches they attended, and both grew into model parents with high achieving kids of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tool of parenting? You damn betcha, and my hat is off to the parents of the young people I saw perform so well at the Pin Shoot in Michigan in June of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
