We live in times that could raise any American citizen’s blood pressure. The atrocity that occurred today at the Boston Marathon. A whacked-out martinet on the other side of an ocean threatening to nuke our country. No wonder so many of our neighbors are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
Of course, the moonbeams and butterflies crowd can’t distinguish between preparation and paranoia. Here, the Daily Sheeple takes a wry look at the matter of “prepping”: http://www.thedailysheeple.com/you-may-be-a-dangerous-paranoid-doomsday-prepper-if_042013
It’s interesting how those of us who prepare are paranoid now but WTSHTF ,as it probably will, the table will turn and we’ll see who’s paranoid then. I’d rather nothing bad ever happens buy I believe in the chaos theory.
The same mindset that says you’re insane to buy gold…but every central bank and government is doing exactly that.
Bad things are always happening. Sometimes it is a little thing and sometimes it is big,, a storm knocks out your power for a few hours or days, your employer lets you go, someone breaks into your house, you are a spectator at an event and a bomb goes off. There is always something. It pays to be prepared to the best of your ability. Somethings can be overcome and some can’t. A tornado can strike and blow everything away as it did a few miles from me last year. In cases like that and the Boston bombing all you preparations can be blown away. But there will always be those who are there to help the helpless. I see first responders, family, neighbors and complete strangers come to the aid of victims of disaster all the time. But it pays to be prepared. My father taught me that.
Good vs evil.
Don’t be scared be prepared.
If it is not paranoid to hace a spare tire, jumper cables, tools and first aid kit fot the car, I do not see how it is paranoid to have extra food, water and blankets in the closet. It is also not paranoid to have health, dental or life insurance.
Back last year, here in the UK, the petrol tanker drivers threatened to strike. They didn’t actually go on strike merely threatened to. The result was that within a day the majority of petrol stations were empty and people were queuing for what was available. Shops and supermarkets saw a massive spike in sales as people stocked. All that and without even 1 hours actual strike taking place!
All of a sudden people became more aware of the fragility of their situation!
Back in the good ‘ol days when I was a Boy Scout (yes, the version where we camped in tents in the winter, built fires, learned to use dangerous instruments like axes, knives and guns safely, cook food over an open fire and navigate in the woods using only a compass) the motto was:
“Be Prepared”.
I never forgot those two words. Be Prepared; physically, mentally and spiritually. Works for me.
The parable of the ant and the grasshopper comes to mind — it would be fair to say “let them dance all winter” but most of us ants are decent people.
Hmmm, We have gas masks too, what’s that make us?
massad
why would you consider ANY gun bill coming from schumer to be gun owner friendly…as you are on the committee that was mentioned by alan gottlieb, that supports Manchin-Toomey substitute bill. I would think that a NO compromise stance would be better ,given the liars on the left all these years, that have brought us to this line in the sand….
Since when is being prepared undesirable? After living in Florida since 1955 I think that anyone that doesn’t have at least two weeks supply’s laid by should move back to Staten Island, New Jersey or any one of those liberal governmental run places that will surely care for all of their needs. OOOPS!!!! Maybe not!!!! I will take responsibility for my family and our close friends and for those that have swallowed the KoolAid, TOOOO BAD!!!! I can’t afford 1 billion rounds but you can bet I have enough that my family will survive.
I prepare and but hope it’s never necessary to use my supplies. I often get smart-ass remarks from the other folks at work about having stored food, etc. The big laugh was when one person actually said, “If disaster hits, I’m coming to YOUR house.” My calm reply was, “Then you’ll get shot like any other looter.” The look on their face was priceless!
Very sorry to hear of the bomb attacks in Boston. I am glad that, while horrible, things weren’t worse and I hope that the perpetrator(s) are soon brought to justice.
A comment I came across on another site, which I personaly think is spot on: “It’s important to remember in events like this that early reports are likely as not to be wrong.” Although apparently at least one conspiracy-monger has already labelled it as a “false flag” operation. -sigh-
The “Daily Sheeple” article; not exactly “wry.” Being prepared JIC is one thing, but to me the article came across more along the lines of “People call me a paranoid nutter because I’m building a nuclear weapon in my basement – well the US Government has nukes!” Well, that’s how it looked to me.
Better to have it and not need it…
than need it and not have it.
Even squirrels put food away for the winter: PETA take note.
LOL.
I like the old and now somewhat cleche, I have a fire extingusher, does that make me paranoid that my house is going to burn down? It’s so simple yet covers the preparedness mindset perfectly. It’s just common sense to be prepared for emergencies. Anyone who can’t grasp that is doomed to be hearded into the super dome again. What has 2 thumbs and is prepared for disaster? This guy………
This tragic event in Boston shows all Americans once again that we are not safe anywhere.
Being prepared at all times for the worst is about the only thing you can do and that is not paranoid that is wise in the times we live in.
God bless America, the victims, their families, the first responders and all ordinary citizens who jumped in to help that day. These bums will not bring us down.
President Obama on Gun Control Defeat: “A Shameful Day for Washington”
Posted on April 17, 2013 by Robert Farago
“An angry President Obama criticized a minority of the Senate on Wednesday for helping defeat a proposal to expand background checks on gun purchases,” usatoday.com reports. ”It all came down to politics,” Obama said in the Rose Garden. “All in all, this was a pretty shameful day for Washington.” The president also said the administration would do “everything it can without Congress to protect Americans.” Whatever that means.

@ Captain Bob: Your co-workers comment about coming to your house is why people should be careful who they share their prepping activities with.
Illinois Concealed Carry Bill Fails on the House Floor
by Robert Farago
“The Illinois House tonight defeated a concealed weapons proposal favored by gun rights advocates [i.e. the NRA], a setback that could spur negotiations toward finding common ground with lawmakers who back gun control,” chicagotribune.com reports, oddly, with extreme bias. “Rep. Brandon Phelps, the legislature’s leading concealed carry advocate, challenged his colleagues to vote for what he viewed as reasonable parameters on where people could carry guns in public, who is allowed to carry, who decides whether a person is eligible and how much training should be required. ‘This could be our last chance,’ Phelps said, saying he had made changes to address numerous concerns of gun control lawmakers. ‘We keep giving and we keep giving and we keep giving.'” Illinois HB 997 lost by seven votes. The June 9 court-mandated deadline for a CCW deal looms large.

Police officers secure a school building at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) near where a police …
[Updated at 12:55 a.m. ET]
BOSTON — An intense manhunt is underway for a gunman who shot and killed a campus officer Thursday evening at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office confirmed the officer’s death. The officer, who has not been identified, was reportedly answering a disturbance call when he was shot multiple times about 10:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the university is pleading for students to stay indoors and out of harm’s way.
“The shooter remains at large, police continue to search the campus,” the school warned in a campus alert at 12:37 a.m. “Please REMAIN INDOORS until further notice.”
The university issued the first alert at 10:48 p.m.: “There are gunshots reported in the vicinity of Building 32 (Stata Center). Area is cordoned off. Stay away from area.”
According to audio of MIT police dispatch radio chatter posted online, an officer described the suspected shooter as a black male wearing black clothing and weighing approximately 120 pounds.
Stunned students asked news reporters if the shooting could be tied to this week’s terror attack. However, no motive for the Thursday shooting has been given.
Apart from the whitewash of the terrorist and turning the atrocity from terrorism to simple crime….
The actions of the Boston police in ‘locking down’ over a million citizens, raiding house to house in Watertown forcing people out of their homes and then going through them while the citizens were subject to interrogation… all in order to capture a wounded 19 y/o who had crawled into a Boston Whaler to die.
They weren’t even sure he hadn’t slipped out of their dragnet when they subjected those people to martial law. Was this a test to see if our citizens would take it? They couldn’t just ask them?
This is a sample of what may be to come. Having a gun, or guns, will not be enough when a 9000-man strong goon squad comes armored and in armored vehicles to your neighborhood under color of law to take your guns, your Rights and your freedom.
