After our huge spring snowstorm, we were glad to see the sun come out yesterday. And the temp went up, too … all the way to the mid-fifties! So, our snow melted fast. And to top it off, it began raining last night and is still raining, although cooler — down to the forties. But there are bare patches all around and the grass that shows is GREEN, really green.
Will and David went out this morning with the chainsaw and cleared all along the mile plus driveway. There were broken trees, smaller trees bent permanently over the drive, and many dead small trees down across it. While they were out there, I moved the now-big peppers to our enclosed porch where the cooler temperatures will keep them growing slower because it’s still more than 4 weeks before we’ll be setting out the first ones. All of our peppers look great! Now I’ve got to get the tomatoes transplanted — they really need it! But today I’m blogging and the computer is so slow today! I’m also boiling down ham hocks and beef soup bones for soup stock as we’ve got the freezer emptied — it was drawing too much juice, now that the temperatures are higher.
Will moved the propane refrigerator that was in our old travel trailer down to the basement and set it to its lowest setting, which is well below freezing, so it is now our temporary freezer for the remainder of our meat.
Tomorrow I’ll be canning split pea w/ham soup and beef broth as well as transplanting tomatoes. (I’m kind of glad the weather’s nasty so I can be inside without worrying what I’m missing doing outdoors!)
Also wanted to tell you if you closer I would hug you!
The other day a woman came to the farm to pick up her weekly order of baked bread and eggs. She saw my plants I had transplanted in peat pots set inside the same plastic wash tubs you are using. She almost died, telling me that is so tacky don’t you know they sell trays for that! This coming from a woman who wouldn’t be caught dead in the same dress twice at church. Well maybe that would be the only time. :)
I work in the home health care industry and am given many of these wash tubs from clients just out of the hospital. I gladly take them all. They also work great for storing all sorts of barn goodies and fencing parts.
She returned today to tell me it was OK for me to use the tubs, she had seen on your blog that you use them. She made the trip across town to tell me this.
Thank you for permission, I thought to myself and thank you Jackie for putting a throw away item in many minds a second and very useful life.
Those are some mighty looking pepper plants. They look beautiful. Ours are just putting out their first set of leaves and should be ready to set in the garden the end of June.
Thanks for sharing them, its nice to see green growing.

I wish we had some cooler weather here in Denver. Its been warm, I think my greens & peas would agree. I have a small back yard here but have a small greenhouse with many tomatoes, peppers & squash waiting for ground zero, Mothers Day weekend. We are also first time chicken backyarders should prove to be a great summer in the Mile High City!!
I love reading your blogs.
Thanks
