Spent the first day of the meeting at the annual Firearms Law Seminar, conducted off-site at the downtown Westin in Atlanta.  Emceed by Carol Bamberry, a formidable pro-gun litigator who made the thing work like a Swiss watch, I found it every bit as instructive as it was intended to be. List of topics and speakers can be found here: https://backwoodshome.com/blogs/MassadAyoob/2017/04/19/nraam-2017-and-two-particular-highlights/ .

The Evil Princess went over to the anti-Trump, anti-gun “Die-In” and found it, well, dead.  Our friend Miggy Gonzalez got the same impression, here: http://gunfreezone.net/index.php/2017/04/28/atlanta-first-round-of-anti-nra-protest-is-a-notable-meh/ .

Pickings are reportedly kind of thin this year insofar as new product introductions.  Springfield Armory’s recent suspense-filled intro turned out to be their first traditional double action semiautomatic pistol, a 9mm single-stack called the XDE.  The safety/decock lever works the same way as the one on a Variant 1 HK USP or a current style Taurus PT-92.  Looking forward to giving it a live fire test drive.

I didn’t make it to the Trump appearance, since I was one of the speakers at the Legal Seminar at the same time, but those who did tell me they found him personable, upbeat, and humorous. He declared his continued support for Second Amendment issues, but at least one activist said he was disappointed the President didn’t create an executive order to eliminate gun-free zones like “he said he would.”

More tomorrow.

  1. I think President Trump is finding out that being head of the US isn’t the same as being head of his own company but I commend him for his efforts. I’ve only been to one NRA annual meeting, it was amazing but long ago. One of these days I’d like to get to another one. Maybe sometime they’ll have one here in New England.

  2. Perhaps the gun free zone requires legislative action. As we see Ryan is after his own agenda and matters are not moving smoothly in the house.

  3. The most important thing lets hope we can FINALLY get reciprocal carry passed while we have a pro second amendment President.

Also I watched the entire speech and President Trump was the first President to speak at the NRA since President Reagan. That’s a positive thing folks.

  4. Yes, as Jack said, this is our chance now for National CCW Reciprocity. Everyone, please contact your Senators and U.S. Representatives and voice your support for this. It’s most likely now or never!

  5. Presidential executive orders cannot countermand federal law. However, Trump could cancel anti-gun orders issued by preceding presidents and issue new pro-gun orders that are within the law. So far, he hasn’t done much of either. It would help if the advisory group, led by John Boch and Chris Cox, gave him a list of orders to cancel and drafted new ones for him to sign.

  6. I’d be really curious to hear what Springfield’s booth looked like yesterday and today WRT their apparent capitulation via IFMA. Their Facebook page was a bloodbath.

  7. If reciprocity passes, wouldn’t it be a hoot to have all 40 million gun owners descending on NYC, and just going about their business? I bet crime would grind to a halt on that day.

  8. Thanks for posting that, Mas. I’ve shared it appropriately.

They’ve got a deep hole to recover from.

  9. Govt has no more legitimate authority to end GFZ than it does to establish them.

Your property, your rules. It’s that simple.

Spare me the bit about them taking on the responsibility for your defense. YOU chose to enter voluntarily and thus they owe you nothing. How about actually standing on principle and not engaging in trade with people who support violating your rights. You know, not being a hypocrite?
