Thanks to all who voted!  You made a difference.

Republican control of both houses of Congress is huge for all in the gun owners’ civil rights movement.  The key thing from my point of view is Congressional approval of Federal judges and particularly new Supreme Court justices the lame duck anti-gun President is expected to appoint in the next two years.  The specter of Eric Holder sitting on the Supreme Court is no longer something we need to shudder before.

On local fronts, Charlie Crist, a waffler on more than the gun issue and an opponent of Stand Your Ground rights, missed his Bloomberg-funded bid to topple pro-gun Florida Governor Scott, and Illinois gun owners will be better off with their new Republican governor than they were under the ferociously anti-gun Pat Quinn. A Republican governor has to be an improvement for gun owners in Maryland, too.

Election Day made another specter, that of President Hillary Clinton, a little less substantial. According to TV reports this morning, more than 30 of the Democrats she and her husband campaigned for were trounced.

There were disappointments, though.  In Colorado, Governor Hickenlooper managed to stay in office by less than 1.5% of the vote, thanks to a heavy turnout from the Yuppie enclaves, despite it being proven in public that he had lied to his constituents and his state’s own sheriffs about his ill-conceived, Bloomberg-inspired “assault weapons ban.”  And, in a triumph of Bloomberg purchasing power and propaganda that would have made Goebbels weep in envy, Washington state voters approved the egregious 594 initiative criminalizing ordinary lending of guns between law-abiding people.

Looking at it as a gun owner, I’m not so much into the Republican versus Democrat thing.  I’m a registered Independent, and in most elections vote for candidates from both parties according to the individual rather than the party.  Yet we can’t escape the fact that the Democratic Party itself has published strong anti-gun planks, and the Republican Party has not. I’ll take a proven pro-gun “D” over a waffling or unproven “R” anytime, but the Republican sweep is, in toto, something our side has every right to celebrate.

  1. Like others here, I breathed a sigh of relief when the results came in. Every one of the candidates I voted for won. Every ballot initiative went the way I voted. This scares me as this put me in the mainstream, at least in this state, at least on this election day.

Now, if the Republicans, with their new majority in the senate, will just stem the tsunami of liberal/progressive/socialist appointees of this president, especially federal appeals judges that our constitution will suffer under for many years after this president is gone.

I fear this president will start striking out in anger, pushing the envelope of his definition of executive power, to further erode our rights. Expect an even greater flood of illegal immigration, bans on imported weapons and ammunition, etc.

Hopefully, some of you younger folks will live long enough to remember this election as the day freedom loving Americans woke up and shouted “I will not be a slave to anybody!”

Folks, these politicians are not your masters, they are your employees. We just fired some for poor performance, read some resume’s, and hired some new employees. Make sure they know your watching them and will fire them too if they disappoint you.

  4. Judy,

It applies to ANY type of transfer, including lending. And the “exemptions” have such tight restrictions that they might as well not exist.

I’m really p1$$ed that this atrocious bill has passed.

  6. Same here, Mas. I’m also independent. I guess my American history classes really stuck with me, when they mentioned that Washington was against political parties. I progressed further into that and read some of his writings to get a better idea. Vote for the guy who will actually help your cause. I’m somewhat disappointed with the outcome of the elections, but overall, I’m thinking things might improve.

  9. I don’t live in Washington either – brother does and we were discussing this a bit. Devil is in the details as usual it appears!

  11. Meh, midterms. Enjoy your moment, we Dems will strike back in a couple of years. Can I offer anyone a “Hillary for President” button?

  14. My politically leaning is more libertarian, but I’ll usually vote republican when there isn’t a Libertarian Party candidate on the ballot (like this year). So when will we have national reciprocity for CCWs?

  17. liberal non-uncle Dave, I’m sure you can move a lot of “Hillary For President” buttons among my readers. Many of them are target shooters…the buttons are shaped like bulls-eyes…and shooting holes in the meme of Hillary For President” should be a great motivator for improved marksmanship. 🙂

  19. I don’t want to start up a Rep v Dem debate here, but claiming to be an independent and further claiming to vote for the person rather than the party may make you feel good inside but facts are facts. There is one party that makes no secret about it’s desire to take away your liberty in favor of an all knowing, all powerful central government.
If you vote for a candidate of that party just because they claim to be on your side on one issue, you are strengthening the enemy on other issues.

Case in point: our Democrat senior Senator (who just retired and his replacement added to the Republican majority) is, or at least used to be a few years ago, a member of the NRA. I had at one point a “Mad as hell” letter all written and ready to fire off before I, for once, got a episode of good sense and did some checking. Much to my surprise, when I called his office, I found out he belonged to the NRA.
    Delete.
But careful observation (which most people don’t bother with) revealed his party masters allowed him cover to vote our way when his vote didn’t matter. When all the chips were on the table, he voted party line.

Certain Dems like to air campaign ads featuring themselves holding or shooting the least threatening form of firearm, a sporting shotgun. John Kerry strolling out of a duck blind in brand new camo clothing (oh, how wonderful it would have been to see a tag still attached) as a staffer dutifully, but disgustedly totes the sacrificial duck someone bagged (would have loved to have a GSR test done on Kerry after the “hunt”). Or seeing B. Hussein Obama awkwardly and uncertainly firing a single shot from a shotgun belonging to someone else do not a sportsman make.

Then they turn around and vote to raise your taxes, destroy your health insurance, flood the border with illegals (they hope to eventually turn into Dem voters), kill the unborn and in general tell you how to live your life as they strive to implement their version of the Utopian Workers Paradise where that which is not specifically permitted by the benevolent all knowing, all seeing, all compassionate state is Strictly Verboten!

People get the government they deserve. Be careful with your vote.

  22. And in Clinton news, it would be instructive to be privy to the re-calculations that are now taking place within the Clinton machine. Especially in view of the total lack of effect both Clintons had during the recent elections.

  26. Michael JT, I hear ya. I don’t vote along party lines, but I’ve found that often at the local and county level, the given Democrat may simply be better than the given Republican, and have the cojones to stay that way. The higher up the ladder you go in the Party, the more you apparently have to adhere to the Party Line, and that’s probably why at the higher levels of office my votes tend to go toward the Republicans.

That said, your comment makes me think of our local sheriff. He is stalwart pro-gun and pro-law abiding armed citizen, and has been since he’s been in office. Not just when he was running for election, but actually while he was doing the job. I will continue to vote for him, and hell, if he asked me to campaign for him, I would.

  29. Dave, I hear and couldn’t agree more with your words. Regrettably, I already hear peace entreaties being extended to the Dems, most notably by McConnell. It is my worst fear. This was/is about a COMPLETE rejection of the policies now being pushed at us – most definitely NOT a “reach across the aisle” time. It’s time to start over, NOT “can’t we compromise.” On the much-appreciated response RE: the Hillary buttons, send me a gross of ’em – I need some new incentive to tighten my groups at the range!

  33. I meant most of my words for Dennis, not Dave. Mas, my birthday is July 6, 1948 – I can relate when you comment on “age-related issues,” for sure! I could blame it on typing on this Kindle, but that’s a bit of a cop-out.

  36. Don-Pa, you date me by a little over a year. Don’t apologize, I can describe in great detail things that occurred fifty years ago, but formulate a thought now and forget my premise before I start typing 30 seconds later. Very aggravating.

Can’t agree more about McConnell. First, I wanted his more conservative opponent in the primaries to win, then was almost hoping the dem would unseat him to prevent him fro being majority leader. Almost.

It has been my belief for a long time that if the Republican Party would concentrate more on their conservative base, less time focusing on prying votes out of groups that will never support them, they will retain their majority.

  39. Michael JT – you go, guy! You are “spot-on,” as the Brits are wont to say. There was a time (now here comes the REAL trip down Memory Lane!) when the Republicans went their own way – the “if-you-can’t-debate-the-issues-attack-the-person” thing belonged, 100% – to the Dems. Then, a few “progressive” (excuse me, I feel nauseous) R’s – convinced others to adopt these abhorrent methods of campaigning and legislating. One might ask: “What’s the problem, Don – we’ll get the problems solved quicker if we come together (sick again)?” I’ll tell you what the problem is – the voters, who demonstrated their complete rejection of the current policies last Tuesday, will get po’ed and vote ’em out! NOT THE ANSWER, AMERICA! The reality of America, THE best country in the world, is fading into an illusion, a caricature of what it once was. It makes me very sad. Vote, people – EVERY TIME – like it’s the only vote you’ll ever get.
