So, a newspaper in New York State decided that since guns were obviously tools of the devil, they should publish the names and locations of people licensed to have them in their community. Predictably, the thing backfired on them.

The community they ostensibly served realized that the attempt to demonize gun owners had just put a huge number of vetted, card-carrying “good guys and gals” into the sort of pit of condemnation usually reserved for registered sex offenders.  It had also created, literally, a “shopping guide for gun thieves.”

It was not a wise thing to do in the time of the Internet. One enterprising blogger countered by publishing the home addresses of the newspaper staff.  Utterly horrified, the powers that be at the newspaper called the police and told them they’d been threatened. The police investigated, and determined that readers expressing outrage at the paper having done a stupid thing did not constitute criminal threatening.  The paper, wetting its institutional pants apparently, hired armed security: an act of hypocrisy that will probably be cited in journalism school forever into the future.  (The armed security firm they hired is run by a family named Ayoob; no relation that I know of, but I hope you will forgive the author if he is amused.)

And soon on the heels of that, local corrections officials discovered that inmates were threatening the correctional officers because those officers’ had been named by the paper as permit-holders, and now the prisoners knew where they and their families lived, so they could take revenge when they got out from behind bars.

Most recently, a judge (a permit holder herself, and on the published list) called out the paper for its utter stupidity, here: http://foxnewsinsider.com/2013/01/06/judge-jeanine-pirro-slams-the-journal-news-for-publishing-names-of-gun-permi-owners-including-herself/ .  Bless you, Judge Pirro!

This is the sort of thing that happens when elitists who declare culture wars on people they don’t understand, and try to legislate issues they obviously don’t begin to understand, start throwing their power around in reckless pursuit of “political correctness.”

Speaking of which, the Huffington Post reports that Joe Biden says the President is ready to use Executive Order to bypass Congress to achieve serious firearms ownership restrictions. (Ya know, HuffPost, we knew that, but thanks.) It’s worth reading their account to go to the end for their featurette on ten people who are past the BS symbolism and support something that CAN stop atrocities such as the Newtown Massacre: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/09/joe-biden-gun-group_n_2440359.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl2%7Csec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D254877#slide=more270656

  1. AixSponsa, you don’t get it. If foreign troops invaded to try to be liberals’ storm troopers confiscating guns in the heartland, all they’d do is get themselves killed – as anyone “looking different” or “talking different” under such circumstances would instantly become a target. As for the local cops, they know they have to live there afterwards – stuck there along with their main asset (house) that cannot be stuck on a transport plane to the Northeast by Washington.

  2. The “good news” is that the more they mess around punting the budget the less time they can spend on gun control. The closer the “debate” gets to an election the more it works into our favor. Joe Biden may be an “idiot” to some people but he has survived in big league politics for years. Like the “idiot” used car sales man who has been in the busines for years, he has the skills to get deals done.

  3. Thirty seconds after PAP DOC OBAMA Declairs Martial Law nobody except him and his comrads have any rights period. One shot fired in anger national terrorest emergency and its all over. The last cival war killed 600,000 combatents and God only knows how many civilians to free black men and women. Now a black man may use his powers to enslave the decendants of those who freed the blacks in america. Not him his blood lines are directly from a African nation. A nation on the brink of bankruptsy and financial melt down. The have’s trying to hide what they have and the have nots wanting to take it away from them, wall street crashes, big banks fail this time and this nation is ripe for a cival war. It has happened before in other nations and as history has showed us here in the United States also. For God’s sake think before you type. Think before you speak. How many of you remember Kent State? Probably not many. One shot that almost pushed the nation over the brink back then. Do not ever think this thing can not get out of hand. WHO WILL BE THE FIRST ONE TO BLINK? Not Obama, he and the anointed few are sure that a God sombody’s God has called on them to stop evel. That evel is you and me.

  4. There is a newspaper in Southern Oregon which unfortunately I don’t remember the name of, that has for years been trying to get the information from the Sheriff as to who has concealed carry permits. They want to have the info to print in the paper as a ‘public service’.

What did come out of that effort is that now all Sheriffs ask the question of anyone applying for a permit if they want their info to be made public. Check the yes or no box.

  5. Mas, see the FP-45 Liberator and raise you with the Wiki Weapons project: a group working on creating data files for a cheap, disposable AR15 lower with about a 100-round usable life that anyone with a 3d stereolithographic printer (think Star Trek replicator but only works with plastic so far; commonly available ones are the anti-gun MakerBot and open-source RepRap) can self-manufacture at will.

The genie is out of the bottle, and while the bad news is the criminal element can use it too, the good news is it will make it MUCH easier for the disarmed and oppressed to equip themselves, and harder for the self-appointed Eloi to impose their will upon us Morlocks. (H.G. Wells reference, for those not into the classics, specifically The Time Machine.)

  6. Mas, when you get a minute how about a posting that covers ‘constitutional carry’ versus getting ‘permission’ (permit) from the state. A permit system is just a back door way to register guns and owners, whereas Constitutional carry doesn’t involve any notification to the state of who does, or doesn’t, own and carry handguns. The newspaper divulging this information is a great justification for constitutional carry, don’t you think?
Thank you for your time and consideration.

  7. Hear! Hear! For Major L. Caudill and to Paul Edwards to take the time to type it out for us.

This whole dust up over ARs and large cap magazines takes me back about 30 years ago. Back then the buzz words were Saturday Night Specials. Cheap, small caliber, easily concealable. At the time I argued that if we didn’t have the SNS then the criminal element will be using large caliber, better made and more lethal firearms. Sadly I was proved right. Now the argument, to a certain extent, remains the same. The ARs serve no useful purpose other than to shoot people etc. etc. Personally I love to shoot golf balls at 100 yds. with mine.

  8. Gun Control to Crowd Obama’s 2nd Term

WASHINGTON – President Obama is putting his chips on guns.

It wasn’t an issue he campaigned on – actually, it was almost the opposite of that. It did more to grab him than he did to grab it.

But a month after the unfathomable tragedy at Sandy Hook, the president has positioned himself to take on a fight with long odds as his biggest domestic-policy initiative this side of the never-ending fiscal fights.

The valuable run-up to the inauguration – traditionally a White House’s best chance to put forward a bold new policy initiative – is being dominated by the polarizing debate over gun control. The coming fight has broad implications on virtually every other Washington priority in 2013 and beyond.

Vice President Joe Biden’s guns task force is strongly signaling recommending a robust menu of policy options, spanning executive actions and legislative initiatives. Each piece is sure to require the full force of presidential leadership to turn into action.

“The public demands we speak to it,” Biden said last week, referencing the emotions that followed a tragedy involving young children.

It may yet be a solid bet that this moment is different than past shootings. Powerful allies including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are lending their considerable political weight to the efforts, prodding action along.

Already, the fact that Washington hasn’t lost interest bodes well for a major legislative push that includes more background checks and a renewed assault weapons ban.

But the gun lobby has been explicit that it won’t be giving in. The fight will consume valuable political oxygen, perhaps all of what’s available to a reelected president whose party controls only half of Capitol Hill.

That means other ambitious subject areas – immigration reform, energy and environmental policy, a major infrastructure initiative – will have to wait. Moreover, the coming brinksmanship over spending and budget issues could further poison the chances of action, potentially grinding Washington to an effective halt.

President George W. Bush found out the hard way that political capital doesn’t last long into a second term, even if the president tries to spend it with a friendly Congress. Bush’s push for Social Security reform not only went nowhere, it helped sow the seeds of the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006.

This fight over guns has the potential to be more than that for Obama, though. After a campaign devoid of much inspiration, a passionate debate that gets to the heart of the nation’s culture may be what the recently reelected president needs.

The fight will mobilize and energize those on both sides – even if it tires everyone out before discussions begin in other areas.

But if the president walks away with something substantial, at the very time that major progress on any front is so illusory in Washington, the moment won’t have been wasted.

  9. The Left will never learn or understand, arguing with them is like mud wrestling a pig . . . sooner or latter you realize the pig likes it

  10. NY “Assault Weapons Ban” Covers Just About Everything.

If you think shooters in New York State are going to have it rough if S1422-2013 passes, you haven’t even heard the worst of it. It bans all detachable magazines over 10 rounds (no exceptions, no grandfather clause) and self-loading firearms with detachable magazines and shoulder thingies that go up. But Section 6 of the Empire State’s legislative apocalypse also bans semi-autos with other common features.

One particular evil: barrel shrouds. If your semi has a detachable magazine and a “shroud attached to the barrel, or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel,” you’re SOL, buddy. I guess the NY state assembly likes hot barrels and singed fingers. From the receiver to the muzzle, that barrel better be bare metal. Because it will save lives. I guess.

Another particular evil: muzzle brakes. Your hunting-model BAR in 7mm Magnum better not have a muzzle brake, because we all know that way too many spree killers use guns just like yours. I guess.

What does this leave available? Just about bupkis, with the exception of a (formerly) NY-made Remington pumps and semi-autos. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but is this a coincidence?

This bill is currently in committee, but it has a reasonably chance of passing the Assembly. The way it is currently written, it will take effect immediately if when Governor Andrew Cuomo signs it. This bill will turn thousands of law-abiding good guys with guns into newly-minted felons, and we’re wondering how many of them are getting ready to move to a more gun-friendly state in the very near future.

As in tomorrow, before the NY State Patrol can come and demand to ‘inspect’ their gun collection. Let’s hope there are enough station wagons and Ryder trucks to get them the hell out of Dodge before this goes into effect.

  11. I checked The Michigan Militia’s website, which I think is excellent. They said they would not be participating in any marches. They are afraid they could be used to stage a “false flag” event. In other words, some liberal could pretend to be one of us, then do something stupid, illegal or whatever to make us look bad. The Left would love to paint us as “domestic terrorists” to the sheeple of America. Nowadays video of us marching could be manipulated to show us doing things which never happened.

I no longer believe marches, petitions or even donating money will be effective. My guess is that if gun owners and gun stores could practice civil disobedience, ignoring unconstitutional gun laws, maybe that would work.

  12. “ALL EXECUTIVE ORDERS ARE ILLEGAL, if you read The Constitution you will see in Article II Sections 1. – 4 — that the POTUS powers are few – The President shall be commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, when called into the actual service of the United States; he may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices, and he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.

He shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint ambassadors, other public ministers and consuls, judges of the Supreme Court, and all other officers of the United States, whose appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by law: but the Congress may by law vest the appointment of such inferior officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the courts of law, or in the heads of departments.

The President shall have power to fill up all vacancies that may happen during the recess of the Senate, by granting commissions which shall expire at the end of their next session.
    Section 3.

He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States.
    Section 4.

The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors. NO WHERE IN THE CONSTITUTION DOES THE POTUS HAVE THE RIGHT TO ISSUE EXECUTIVE ORDERS AS LAW. THIS IS DICTATORSHIP AND IS ILLEGAL AS THE CONSTITUTION IS THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND. — ONLY CONGRESS CAN WRITE LEGISLATION AND THE POTUS SIGNS OFF ON IT. THE JUDICIARY UPHOLDS IT AND THE POTUS THEN INSURES THAT THE LAW IS CARRIED OUT. CONGRESS CAN ONLY PASS THOSE LAWS WHICH DO NOT CONFLICT WITH THE CONSTITUTION. — WHAT BHO HAS DONE IS TREASON.”
