I am so, so, SO sick of hearing the prohibitionists say that cops don’t want you good people to have guns.

If you haven’t seen it already, check out what I had to say on that in the current issue of Backwoods Home http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob142.html.

Enough said for now…

  1. Been a cop most of my life. I am an Oath Keeper. I encouraqe all decent citizens to have and know how to properly use firearms. It is a must.

  2. Welcome to the blog, Charles.

No, this piece wasn’t written in response to that particular article, just in response to a lot of BS quotes like many that it contained.

  3. Great article Mas, thanks. My experience reflects and substantiates your “Cop’s Eye View”. As you know, in NC the local Sheriff handles pistol purchase permits and concealed carry permits. Our Sheriff, John Ingram, is one of the best of the good guys. During a routine DWI checkpoint stop recently, when one of his deputies requested my drivers license, I handed him my license and concealed carry permit. He asked if I had my weapon in the car and I honestly responded with “not today, Sir”. He was perplexed and reminded me that my “piece of paper” (carry permit) is not going to impress someone aiming to do me harm and that the next time he stopped me, he expected me to be carrying my weapon. “We gun owners need to stick together” was his final comment as he smiled and waved me through. My sheriff is no sock-puppet and his deputies share his pro-gun stance. I consider myself very fortunate to live in this county.

  4. Having been in the military, and Federal law enforcement for about 36 years, it has been my experience that any hostility within law enforcement towards citizens having firearms, is not with the rank and file officers, or even the lower, or mid level management, but is parroted by, and coming from the executive levels, from Police Officials who are either serving at their bosses pleasure, or whose future, and promotions, or retirement depends on their being “Politically Corect”, and doing as their bosses, and local Politicians dictate to them.

Beyond that, there are simply way too many areas where the on duty patrolmen are all alone, without any reasonable backup, or help, other than from armed civilians, or perhaps an officer from a different agency, if everthing suddenly turns totally to shit for them.

  5. Thanks for posting your article. I read it a few days ago and wanted a way to refer it to others besides the magazine (not that I don’t recommend BHM). Also @ Charles, The WSJ article makes me wonder how reasonable people can still believe fatal shootings are the “gold standard” of firearms use in self defense.

  6. I began my law enforcement career in 1977 and currently retired. I hold a bachelors degree and was in a supervisory position in patrol 21 of those years. Since retirement I actively read and follow police websites almost daily. I can tell you from what I read from law enforcement officers all around the nation and all my current circle of LEO friends they are all 100% pro gun and against any assault weapons ban and further restrictions. I myself am a life member of the NRA, pro gun and all the years I worked the streets I informed the members of the public on countless occasions the need for a firearm for self-protection for the circumstances they were experiencing. Being an experienced street cop I know guns in the hands of law abiding citizens are indeed life savers.

  7. “I’m so, so, SO sick of hearing” how cops support my right to firearms and self-defense — they’ll still arrest me.

  8. I think great blog on why many that are cops are not all fall in love restrictive gun laws be enforced passed in states like Chicago California New York Colorado New Hampshire. Same guns law effect the public in those states are be vigorously enforce upon the police have protech services in those states. There fact people push this gun laws on ever one have come up insane reasoning that well if public only has so many rounds in there guns than police should need many rounds in there gun deal with them. From California you have well bad thing just do not happen enough for cops there worry adout have need Ar 15. Which stupid becuase bad event seem happen ever year so where cop fire more ten round or need Ar 15 fight those arm with one. Those in charge police in those state try tell rank file well you all be safer becuase bad guys well have play buy rules if we make you all play buy rules. Which I do not under standing reasoning behind that Mass?? Be police cheif of major police deparments now days like La poilce Chicago police New York police you have be on ant gun side of table.

  9. Gun Geo Marker: App for Outing Gun Owners

Posted on July 7, 2013 by Nick Leghorn

Apparently outing gun owners like they were sex offenders is in vogue these days. A new app just released on the Android market is seeking to “crowd source” the pinpointing of “dangerous guns” and their owners. The site didn’t specify what they consider to be “dangerous” guns, but judging by the AR-15 in the logo it looks like they assume anything that Dianne Feinstein believes fits the bill of an “assault weapon” should be reported. Make the jump for the app’s description.

Geolocate Dangerous Guns and Owners with the Gun Geo Marker. Geolocation means marking dangerous sites on the App’s map so that you and others can be aware of the risks in your neighborhood.

The Gun Geo Marker operates very simply, letting parents and community members mark, or geolocate, sites associated with potentially unsafe guns and gun owners. These locations are typically the homes or businesses of suspected unsafe gun owners, but might also be public lands or other locations where guns are not handled safely, or situations where proper rights to own or use any particular type of firearm may not exist. Electronically marking these locations can help others in the area learn about their geography of risk from gun accidents or violence. No matter what your safety concern with firearms might be, you should feel free to use this tool to provide the most accurate information you can such that others can make their own safety decisions.

As a crowd sourced information tool, the information about dangerous gun sites comes from users. Please follow us at http://www.gungeomarker.org, https://twitter.com/gungeomarker and https://www.facebook.com/GunGeoMarker

  10. Mas

I think what you are skipping over is the fact that nearly EVERY police “chief” in major US cities likes to blame someone for political gains. It goes with the job. I’ve had dinner with 4 different police “chiefs” in Minneapolis and the last one was not someone I would put in the same category as yourself.

Cops might vote Republican and pro-2A, but Chiefs are all Democrats and want all civilian guns banned.

  11. Great article Mas. Well thought out and covers a lot of topics that the Puppet News agencies refuse to cover without bias.

Perhaps the press needs to talk to the cops on the street instead of the talking heads that worry about serving at the pleasure of an anti-gun mayor to get the real story about how cops feel about legally armed citizens.

God forbid that the mainstream press actually covers both sides of the story. I have shared your article on FB so more folks can get the facts.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  12. Oh man you really need to read the reviews for the GunGeoLocator App mentioned by Richard above. They are pure comedy gold. I guarantee you wont be disappointed.

As for his other post I can only assume (difficult to understand) he equates prohibitionist police with those in cities that the local police also provide security services. Similar to NYCPD. However I also know plenty of NYCPD that advocate law abiding citizens arm themselves.

So far the only generalization that seems to be accurate is that those police ranks that are appointed by the city council usually have to tow the party line of those in power. So if the city powers that be are anti-gun then so follows the chief.

  13. Howdy folks,
Just a friendly reminder to all us good gun guys and gals to use proper spelling, grammar and sentence structure when posting comments on internet blogs and forms. We all have important points to make but for anyone to take us seriously (peers or critics), our comments need to level headed and legible. I know for a fact that I don’t bother trying to read a comment full of run-on sentences and poor spelling.

  14. I’m a retired big city cop(35 years). Most cities offer civil service protection up to the rank of captain, after that it’s completely political, serving at the whim of the mayor or city manager. When Obama parades out the anti-gun police chiefs they will parrot the views of their liberal benefactors or find themselves demoted to their last civil service rank rather quickly. Never met a street cop who didn’t back armed citizens defending themselves and their families. I know personally of more than one officer surviving bad situations when armed citizens stepped up to assist.

  15. It all amzasing see ant gun control trolls come pro gun blog trying accuse people write in them as uneducated americans. Who do not deserve write there opion in them becuase does agree with theres. It all amzase that people who seem can not under stand one opion becuase bad grammar or spelling seem care about that more than subject of opion given. If people are more concern about spelling grammer than they are about gun rights freedom than truely are as society ready lose are guns rights freedom . To those who would gladly take them away from all.

  16. Mas,

Thanks for your article. It is VERY comforting to know that so many cops and sheriffs are patriots. The other side better come to their senses and give up their dreams of world domination. They have fooled a lot of people, and they control our money, but I can’t see them ever getting to the point where they can control our lives the way they want to.

  17. I am not advocating this in the least… However, to nullify the GunGeoMarker’s effectiveness we should all download the app (those that have Androids, at least) and mark every house in our neighborhood as having a ‘Dangerous Gun.’ I am sure that the one or two people who are supplying the app do not have the time or resources to check every geotag upload and most likely just let them remain as they are tagged.

  18. Jim Carrey Kind-of Apologizes to ‘Assault Rifle Fans’

Jim Carrey is apparently becoming a kinder, gentler proponent of gun control.

The “Kick-Ass 2” star stirred up quite a controversy two weeks ago when he suddenly turned his back on next month’s comic book adaptation due to its portrayal of high school students as ass-kicking vigilantes, a premise he’s now uncomfortable with after the Sandy Hook tragedy.

[Related: Jim Carrey Disowns New Flick, ‘Cannot Support’ Gun Violence]

“I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” the star announced via Twitter. “My apologies to others involve [sic] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

Now, Carrey has followed up distancing himself from “Kick-Ass 2” with a somewhat out-of-nowhere apology to “assault rifle fans” for past name-calling. The star released the following pair of tweets yesterday morning:

    Jim Carrey ✔ @JimCarrey

    Asslt rifle fans,I do not agree wth u,nor do I fear u but I do love u and I’m sorry tht in my outrage I called you names.That was wrong. 3^{

As Huffington Post points out, no specific name-calling was referenced, though Carrey has certainly used a few colorful terms to describe opponents of gun control in the past.

“‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.Sorry if you’re offended…,” he tweeted on March 24.

“My love to the victims in Colorado. The kid ws sick bt u who can still support automatic weapon sales r the real maniacs in this country,” he tweeted on July 21, 2012.

As Carrey says in yesterday’s tweets that his “position on assault weapons hasn’t changed,” we assume that means he’s still turning his back on “Kick-Ass 2,” a move that has upset many of his colleagues, including “Kick-Ass” author Mark Millar.

“As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago,” Millar wrote via MillarWorld. “Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called ‘Kick-Ass 2’ really has to do what it says on the tin.”

  19. @Eddie: You said “our comments need to level headed and legible”. I believe you left out the word ‘be’ between level and headed.

Not every one has a Ph.D in English.

  20. That “Gun Geo Marker” app is going to be ripe for abuse by the anti’s.

Their “guidelines” for being a responsible user of the app are just sugar coating to cover their behinds when the app is misused.

p.s. In my post to Eddie the word “be” should have been before the word level, not between level and headed.

I have an excuse. I’m visually impaired. Also I don’t have a Ph.D in English.

  21. Mas,
Many gun owners here in NY State are consoling themselves with happy thoughts about the cops (typically county sheriffs) who say they are against the Safe Act. Unfortunately, we’re reading about people in NY being arrested and charged with violating the same act, mainly by the State Police. We even had the State Police demand the revocation of a local gun owners pistol permit because somehow the NYSP managed to get hold of his medical records. He had to lawyer up to get his guns and permit back. It’s not pretty here in NY State, and the politicians are getting nervous as the elections approach. Payback is on the way. I don’t blame the cops – we the people elected these idiots.

  22. Good News today – July 9th, as all 50 states of the union now allows concealed carry including the last hold out Illinois despite it’s rabidly anti-gun governor’s veto which was overruled by lawmakers of both parties.

I look forward to enjoying the liberals’ rage when violent crime rates in Illinois drops dramatically soon after it’s citizens begin to lawfully carry their guns out on the streets. Criminals in Illinois and their liberal patrons in that state’s and cities’ government will be in fear with it’s good citizens protecting themselves and other potential victims with firearms just as our
founding fathers intended and the U.S. Constitution decreed.

  23. @Cincinattus – I assume you took your pseudonym from Cincinnatus, the Roman aristocrat who is best known for stepping down after being given absolute power twice in his life. A lesser known fact is that he was a staunch opponent of the middle and lower classes of Roman society.

All that aside, I wonder at your comment. Do you expect officers to turn a blind eye if you commit a crime? Give you a nod and a wink if they find you in the middle of a felony? Simply because you are a gun owner or ‘pro 2nd Amendment’?

  24. Unrelated topic, that guy Adam Kokesh was arrested last night. Orbiting helicopter, APC , swat team, multiple agencies, Town of Henrdon police, Fairfax County, US Park Police (30 minutes from DC). Was about a mile from my house. They practically brought an army to arrest this guy.

  25. Mas, I read Gravest Extreme years ago and consider you to be the go-to guy on self-defense issues. Not to hide the ball in asking this question, though I’ve been a gun owner in the past (and am not now only through happenstance, not principle), I’m also a Liberal Democrat and a believer in gun control. I’ve been reading and listening to your comments about the Zimmerman case and there seems to be a topic that’s missing. Based on your prior writings, I find it difficult to believe that notwithstanding your support of Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine laws and the right of concealed carry that in light of the possible legal costs and risks that you would think that what George Zimmerman was doing that night, engaging in an _armed_ unofficial citizen’s patrol, was a good idea, especially (but not only) if one factors in his alleged failure to follow police instructions and willingness to follow and confront suspicious persons. Have you commented on that aspect of this matter, and if not, what do you think?

  26. Dave, regarding your lack of understanding relating to the Zimmerman trial: Your statements reveal that you have gotten your information from the media rather than by following the actual trial and testimony. In a way, it isn’t your fault; the media reports have led you to adopt the presumptions you listed. With a little research, you will find that every one of those bits of “common knowledge” is inaccurate. You should look forward to Mas’s response in a few days. I know I will.

  27. When I googled “police opinions about gun control,” it turned up an article (or maybe editorial) from Times Daily published in December of last year. It is a perfect example of your point. “Police Know Urgency of Gun Control,” “we should listen to what law enforcement officers have to say,” “the men and women who patrol our streets every day” want “greater restrictions on gun ownership.” But every “officer” they quoted was a chief or commissioner; not one was a working street cop. The MSM have consistently slanted their reporting to make cops look racist and brutal (the edited Rodney King video, the Luis Alvarez trial, the Overtown shooting, the “unarmed bridegroom” in New York), so their feigned respect for “the men and women who patrol our streets” and crocodile tears for officers killed in the line of duty are hard to take.

  28. SF Police Chief Calls for National Gun Registry

By Robert Farago on August 11, 2013

“San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr called for a nationwide gun registry at an American Bar Association meeting in the city Friday,” nbcbayarea.com reports. “‘There needs to be some form of national gun registry so we know who has them, so we know that everyone who has them is cleared, checked, responsible,’ Suhr said during a panel discussion on strategies to prevent gun violence. ‘It gives law enforcement the best chance to keep everybody safe,’ he said.” Because the police are what keeps people safe, not armed citizens. Obvs. [/sarc] Calguns’ Chairman Gene Hoffman slammed the Chief’s assertion, but agreed that background checks are a good thing, not a bad thing. Guess whose opinion more closely reflects that of the ABA? Hint: in 2011 the Standing Committee on Gun Violence [sic] resolved that . . .

The American Bar Association opposes federal legislation that would force states to recognize permits or licenses to carry concealed weapons issued in other states.

Because . . . civilian gun owners hip is bad. M’kay?

No matter who “won” the Lawyers, Guns and Money conference, the ABA’s 2013 resolution re: firearm should be equally antagonistic to American’s natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. As one participant [should have] said, “How was I to know they were with the Russian too?”
